Proposed Amendment to Alabama Constitution Would Have Chilling Effect on Political Speech

Ahead of a vote on a proposed amendment (SB 356) to the Alabama Constitution that would severely restrict political speech, FreedomWorks National Director of Grassroots Noah Wall commented:

“Since when did Bernie Sanders takeover the Alabama Senate? This is the kind of bad idea one would expect from a radical leftist demagogue like Sanders, but it’s not something that any constitutional conservative or Republican should ever support. This is a dangerous proposal that would have a chilling effect on political speech in Alabama. The First Amendment – which protects our right to free speech, including political speech – exists for a reason, and it’s to ensure that everyone who wants to have a voice in the process has that opportunity. We can’t allow lawmakers to gut a fundamental right just to keep their constituents uninformed and quiet.”
