Reduce Recidivism and Enact Fairer Sentencing

FreedomWorks Vice President of Legislative Affairs Jason Pye made the following statement after the markup of the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act, S. 1917:

"Thank you to Chairman Grassley, Sen. Lee, and others for their leadership on these important issues. As we’ve seen in states like Georgia, Kentucky, and Oklahoma, states have been successful in implementing policies that reduce recidivism and enacting fairer sentencing laws while enhancing public safety. The Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act would enact many of the same policies so successful in the states to the federal corrections system. It will provide those who have made mistakes with an opportunity for, as President Trump mentioned in his State of the Union address, second chances at becoming productive citizens.

"We’re disappointed in those who voted no in committee, particularly Sen. Cornyn. Frankly, we’re puzzled why he would oppose such modest reforms that he was supportive of in the past."
