Senior Senator

Name: Max Cleland

Narrative: Cleland, a decorated veteran who lost both legs and an arm in a Vietnam War grenade blast, was compensated $39,719 last year by the Veterans Administration. He also received $10,000 from Longstreet Press for a publishing agreement on his book, Going for the Max. The American Trial Lawyers Association funded Cleland’s trip to Chicago last August, and Stetson University paid for his lodging in DeLand, Fla., when he spoke there in March.

Name: Zell B. Miller

Narrative: Miller, a former two-term governor, took about a $300,000 pay cut when he agreed to be appointed and then elected to the Senate last year. He had to give up $130,000 in salaries as a professor at two universities, Young Harris and the University of Georgia. In addition, he gave up $56,250 in consultant fees from Philip Morris Management Corporation and director’s fees from numerous companies. Miller owns a radio station in Young Harris and rents out a mobile home that he owns.
