Washington, DC- Once again, South Carolina Representative Jenny Horne (R-94) is standing in the way of statewide education reform. In a last ditch effort to block education reform bill H.4894, Representative Horne is attempting to delay a vote on the House floor until after the filing deadline for state house elections in order to prevent the vote from being an “election litmus test” for conservative legislators.
In response, FreedomWorks activists will be making calls and emails to Rep. Horne’s office in the next couple of days, asking her, “Why are you playing politics at the expense of children and parents? School choice is the right choice for South Carolina.”
Rep. Horne has a history of preventing school choice in South Carolina. Last year, Horne crossed the aisle and voted against Republicans in her own caucus to kill an earlier version of the school choice bill, H. 3407.
FreedomWorks Campaigns Coordinator David Spielman commented, “Rep. Horne claims to stand for conservative principles, but she repeatedly stands in the way of free-market reform that would benefit students and families statewide. Makes you wonder as a constituent, where do her loyalties lie?”
FreedomWorks launched round two of a statewide school choice campaign in South Carolina in January, rallying support for the South Carolina House bill, H.4894. The bill uses tax credits and deductions to empower families and business entrepreneurs to send students to schools that best meet the individual needs of each student. South Carolina currently spends about $12,000 per student each year, but it is ranked 47th in the nation in test scores.
The House and Ways and Means Committee voted earlier this month to pass H.4894 by a margin of 16-8, following intense grassroots pressure from FreedomWorks activists across the state. FreedomWorks plans to continue its efforts, and has armed distribution centers statewide with tens of thousands of voter education materials, including door hangers, yard signs, district-targeted palm cards, tee shirts and bumper stickers.
Spielman continued, “Parents have made their message very clear this time around. You are either standing with the students and parents of South Carolina, or you are against us. There is no grey area here. If Jenny Horne prevents H.4894 from passing, she will have to answer to her constituents when elections come around.”
Founded in 1984, FreedomWorks has over 1.6 million grassroots volunteers nationwide. The organization is chaired by former U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey and the President is Matt Kibbe. FreedomWorks recruits, educates, trains and mobilizes grassroots activists across America to advance the ideas of lower taxes, less government and more freedom.
