The Affordable Care Act is Anything but Affordable

The most vulnerable people in America are on the brink of losing their health insurance and messaging from the Left has been consistently silent about addressing the issue, other than somehow blaming it on Republicans. Iowa’s individual healthcare market is hanging in the balance of monumental collapse. The fact is that the so-called “Affordable Care Act” is anything but affordable and has attacked the insurance market by doubling premiums and no one on the Left seems to want to talk about it.

All while Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) makes up hypothetical tragedies on Twitter, there is a real crisis happening right now, and that is the failure of a healthcare system that restrains the market, and over regulates the insurance industry to a tipping point from which it will be incredibly difficult to bounce back from.

As a result of strenuous regulations, excise taxes and the overreaching structure of ACA the insurance companies, medical practices, and the American people are losing. Elected officials like Sen. Warren love to play identity politics, but analyzing the toll that Obamacare has taken on the American people isn’t a partisan issue. It doesn’t matter if you are a Democrat or Republican, voted for Trump or Hillary, or don’t participate in politics at all, as an American you are losing options for health insurance under Obamacare and fast.

States like Iowa are down to their last individual healthcare insurer, with talk of having 0 in 2018, as a result of Obamacare. Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield has already left the Iowa insurance market after seeing a loss of $90 million in Iowa the past 3 years. Medica the last insurer in Iowa is on the verge of backing out due to a loss of $1.5 million last year as well. This is not coincidence and is directly caused by the ACA. It is affecting real Iowans like Karen Slessor who at 61, has diabetes and arthritis. She is one of the tens of thousands who rely on the individual market to purchase health insurance. She along with over seventy thousand Iowans will be left without choices for health insurance next year, if Medica pulls out of the market. It is no surprise to conservatives that a federally controlled healthcare system where the government attempts to predict the market would not work and we would be left with a devastating market failure.

What the ACA did do was not expand coverage, not lower costs, and not bring more choices to Americans, yet Democratic leaders like Sen. Warren continue to point blame on Republicans and ignore reality, which for many Iowans is life-threatening.

The people in the individual market are those who either, no longer work, do not qualify for government handouts, and don’t receive insurance through their employer. These are many Americans with whom Donald Trump connected in 2016, and for good reason. These are the Americans who have worked their whole lives to pay into a system at astronomical rates and didn’t expect handouts in return, but what they did want was to be left alone. Obamacare is affecting peoples lives by increasing premiums, decreasing coverage and negatively impacting the market making it impossible for insurers to operate within the state.

The fight for healthcare freedom is not over, and the fight to get government off our backs and out of our healthcare is in full swing. It is not only unjust; it is un-American to take away the individual choice of Americans like Karen Slessor. The American Dream is, as defined in the Declaration of Independence, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” and the disaster the Democrats left after passing Obamacare is malicious and a threat to all Americans.

The argument has been made for years circulating around who should pay for healthcare, should it be the government, the individual, the one percent or some combination of the three? Regardless of your answer, millions of Americans will be out of insurance options in 2018 as a direct result of Obamacare and that is what we should be talking about.
