Are Republicans Serious About Reducing the Size of the Federal Spending Monster?

Maybe, maybe not. U.S. House of Representatives Republicans will unveil a 10-year budget blueprint in the next few weeks that will champion fiscal austerity, a theme party leaders hope will energize conservative voters ahead of the November congressional elections.

Illinois Budget Failures Continue

The State of Illinois is a basket case.  Unable to control its reckless spending, the state legislature approved a budget that calls for higher spending, even though the state has billions in unpaid bills and tens of billions in unfunded pensions. The pension problem, and the promises officials have made to state workers to get their votes, are now too big to ignore.

House GOP Uses Political Jujitsu

As Republicans were starting the 113th Congress, I offered them some unsolicited advice from my years in marketing. Noting the overwhelmingly pro-Obama bias of the mainstream media, I recommended they use a little messaging jujitsu. They could use the president’s rhetoric against him and win over a frustrated electorate at the same time.

The Salmon Rule: A Vote for Common Sense

Keep your word. Don’t take things that aren’t yours. Don’t spend more than you have. This is common sense for most people. But in Washington, D.C., these grade-school lessons are considered downright radical.

SC Candidate Forum: A Testament to the Bottom-Up Grassroots Model

FreedomWorks teamed with South Carolina’s grassroots activists to host a two-hour candidate forum in the state’s 1st Congressional District. On Saturday, February 16th, 16 candidates vying to fill the seat formerly held by Senator Tim Scott met at the Embassy Suites Hotel in North Charleston for a substantive policy discussion. A range of individuals—state-level politicians, small business owners, local activists and a former governor—fielded questions on pressing political and legislative matters.

The Fiscal Cliff Comes Back to Bite Voters: How Should Republicans Respond?

As the first paychecks of 2013 were deposited into accounts earlier this month, some workers undoubtedly wondered why their take-home pay seemed lighter than in December. The reason was simple: the fiscal cliff deal is now beginning to rear its ugly head in the form of a payroll tax increase. Oddly, no one seemed more surprised than Obama supporters themselves.  “What happened?” rang out among liberal blogs and message boards.

Read Our Lips, House Republicans: Balance the Budget and Don't Raise Taxes

Today, FreedomWorks joins with other fiscally conservative groups in urging House Republicans to pass a budget that balances in ten years or less and which does not raise taxes.  [Note: The only budget plan FreedomWorks has seen to date that actually reflects these principles is the "Platform to Revitalize America" offered by tea-party-aligned Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky. This bold, principled plan would balance the budget in 5 years, eliminate 4 cabinet departments, shrink the government, and "stop the debt."] The following letter, signed by FreedomWorks, presents our case to House Republicans and affirms our committment to fiscal responsibility in government.

Balanced Budgets: Tea Party 'Terrorizing' Europe

While American lawmakers and the president are watching their disastrous monetary and fiscal policies unfold with the credit downgrade of U.S. debt by Standard & Poor’s (S&P), some European countries are finally waking up to the reality of failed Keynesian economic policies that the tea party has been warning about for years. Last week, Italy and France have both proposed adding a Balanced Budget Amendment to their constitutions.
