2014 Common Core Legislation Round-Up (10th Update)

BY Shane Vander Hart

Here’s the latest round of Common Core legislation that has been filed. There’s too many to do individual articles so I wanted to get caught up and mention them in one article. As a recap I’ll also mention bills I’ve already written about. I’m sure I’m also missing legislation, my apologies if I miss your state. Taking in Common Core news (and my inbox) is like drinking from a fire hose. If I missed something leave a comment and I will add it—this is a work in progress.

Focus on Winning Issues in 2014: ObamaCare and School Choice

The year that we are bidding farewell to has been nothing short of creepy when one considers it through the prism of personal freedom. As I write this, I'm fairly certain the NSA is watching me through the lights on my Christmas tree, which also seem to be blinking "What are you wearing?" in Morse code. We have a unilateral edict egomaniac in the White House and we are mere hours away from the IRS being able to demand your financials AND your latest colonoscopy pics (trust me, they'll get there).

Common Core Coming for Little Girls

A lot of people around the country are concerned with Common Core for a variety of reasons. Americans are standing up and fighting back against this huge government intrusion. However, it turns out that schools aren’t the only people lining up to indoctrinate your kids into common core. Your little girls are getting common core in places you might not expect: in their toys and extra-curricular activities.

Friedman Foundation Study Focuses on How Parents Choose the Right Schools for their Children

There are a lot of reasons that parents choose the schools that they do for their children. For some parents, it is a clear decision, for some, it is a decision which is agonized over. The Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice recently released a study on the factors that go into these decisions, and the answers might surprise you.

Losing Literacy

Until WWII, American children learned to read by utilizing phonics. Words were not learned by memorization but rather, children learned that each letter had a corresponding sound. When put together with other sounds, a word was made. This method had proved to be extraordinarily successful since America’s founding and two centuries beyond. It was this method that allowed Benjamin Franklin to be a proficient reader before ever stepping foot into a classroom.

The Common Core Fight is On in Tennessee

Common Core is awfully unpopular for something that’s supposed to be so great. State after state is trying to keep academic freedom alive, and Tennessee is joining that list. Hearings have been held in the Volunteer State, and the fight is on.
