Common Core vs. Autonomy: It's All About the Money

Here at FreedomWorks, we….well, we know that freedom works. We know that, if the federal government would leave us alone and let market forces work, the American people would flourish and thrive.  Whether it's the NSA revelations, the IRS scandal, or the imposing takeover of our health care system, Americans are seeing a grand expansion of federal control.

The U.S. Education System: What Went Wrong? Part I

Something is seriously wrong with our education system. But before we can prescribe any cures we must understand the ailment. Our education problems are too big for sound bites. The system’s faults are too complex for mere political rhetoric. As such, I will be writing a few different blog posts to explain what exactly went wrong with our education system.

New York Times Notices Strengthening Opposition To Common Core

Progress. The Common Core, a set of standards for kindergarten through high school that has been ardently supported by the Obama administration and many business leaders and state legislatures, is facing growing opposition from both the right and the left even before it has been properly introduced into classrooms.

American Federation of Teachers vs. Dearborn

The American Federation of Teachers is a little bit clingy. Who can blame them, I suppose, when they are losing left and right? When local affiliates decide to disentangle themselves from the AFT in favor of more local control, the AFT has a very hard time letting go. This is currently the case in Dearborn, Michigan, as the Dearborn Federation of School Employees has decided to strike out on their own. The AFT is not letting them go without a fight.

Top 10 Reasons to Oppose Common Core

The ultimate goal of Common Core is to have every school district follow the same national standards. This is a failed educational approach that will undermine educational quality and choice. Georgia Takes Back Some Academic Freedom

In Georgia, academic freedom is a mixed bag. Legislators in that state have accepted Common Core standards, which gives the federal government unprecedented control over testing standards in individual states. As one of 22 states in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers,  they handed over some of their local control to federal overseers. However, Georgia took steps this week to maintain some level autonomy.
