A Different Angle on Government-assisted Cronyism: Anti-Trust Cronyism

It goes without saying that at FreedomWorks Foundation (FWF), we keep our eye on cronyism rearing its ugly head in the regulatory process. But another type of cronyism is bouncing around Washington these days, and it flies under cover of anti-trust protections against monopolies.

CREATES Act Opponents are Direly Wrong

Once in a long while, Congress finds a bipartisan fix for dire issues like prescription drug prices. The CREATES Act is such a solution that would remedy price-hiking loopholes abused by big pharmaceutical companies.

Victory for Trade as Administration Rejects Boeing's Crony Request

Last month, the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) voted unanimously against Boeing in a trade case it brought against its rival, Bombardier. Boeing had argued that Bombardier had illegally harmed their business by offering Delta Airlines a series of jets at a low rate. This claim was dubious, and was a clear attempt to try and eliminate their competition. The ITC’s decision is a victory for trade and anti-cronyism.

Boeing Marches Onward Under a Cronyist Banner

Competition is the hallmark of our economy. It promotes freedom of choice, innovation, and will lead to better products and prices for consumers. Not only that, but it is a key driver of job growth for Americans.

Don’t Bring Back Earmarks

Sigh. Here we go again. The House Republican Conference is quietly discussing the possibility of bringing back earmarks, or dedicated federal funds in appropriations bills usually for pet projects in a member’s district or state. The organizations or projects for which these funds are earmarked aren’t the subject to committee hearings and serve some special interest. Earmarks are pork-barrel spending by another name.

Cronyism is Killing America

The growth of America’s government may soon be outpaced by growth of the average waistline new indicators reveal. Rates of obesity have been increasing over the past several decades, but are now reaching some incredible levels. Currently it's estimated that well over one-third of adults are classified as obese and nearly two-thirds are classified as overweight. Perhaps more distressing is the recent discovery that one in six children are suffering from obesity.

Cut Cronyism and Calories

The only thing growing faster than the government, it seems, is the waistline of the average American. Obesity rates have been on the rise over the past several decades, but are now reaching some incredible heights. Nearly two-thirds of the country are now considered overweight or obese and more than one in twenty are considered extremely obese.

The Faux Threat of the Chinese Economy

China has been in the American political discourse quite a bit. Most recently, President Trump spent last year’s campaign saying “(China’s) killing us” economically. As has been the argument among many for awhile, China is outperforming the US with a faster growing economy and a high trade deficit with the US. Indeed, the prediction of the day when China beats the US as THE world superpower has been a belief for quite some time now. Of course, like with many things, the common wisdom that China is on the rise is wrong as mismanagement and corruption have actually started slowing down the Chinese economy which will eventually snuff its predicted superpower status before it ever happens.

Key Vote YES on the Sanford Amendment to H.R. 5293 for Responsible Spending

As one of our over 5.7 million FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and ask them to vote YES on Rep. Sanford’s (R-SC) amendment to H.R. 5293, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2017. The amendment would keep in place the U.S. military’s current practice of providing vouchers to recruits allowing them to pick the shoe of their choice. Recently, legislation passed the House and Senate that would change this practice and cost the taxpayers over $300 million. Rep. Sanford’s amendment to H.R. 5293 is expected to be considered on the House floor tomorrow, June 16.
