DOJ Overtly Attempts to Undermine President Trump's Prison Reform Agenda

Over the past several months, there has a been a campaign against the FIRST STEP Act, H.R. 5682, waged by a handful of reactionaries whose mindset is better suited for the 1980s. It has been suspected, although not confirmed, that the talking points against the bill were coming from the Department of Justice (DOJ). We now know this to be an indisputable fact.

Ways and Means Republicans Demand Answers from DOJ on Refusal to Return Wrongfully Seized Money

Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee want to know why the Department of Justice (DOJ) has denied petitions by Americans whose money was seized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The seized money was subject to federal civil asset forfeiture hearings in which the individual from whom the money was taken had to prove that it wasn’t connected to any wrongdoing.

States Lead the Way on Criminal Justice Reform

Over the past several months, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has taken a step back on federal justice reform efforts, regressing to purportedly “tough on crime” stances. From advising increased penalties for nonviolent offenders to more recently promising an increase in the use of civil asset forfeiture by the federal government, Sessions has been doing everything in his power to give the Department of Justice (DOJ)’s full support to 80s-era policies from which many conservatives have abandoned in favor of evidenced-based practices that reduce recidivism and enhance public safety.

Support the Fifth Amendment Integrity Restoration (FAIR) Act, S. 642 and H.R. 1555

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your senators and representatives and ask them to cosponsor the Fifth Amendment Integrity Restoration (FAIR) Act, S. 642 and H.R. 1555, introduced by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.). The FAIR Act would reform federal civil asset forfeiture laws to increase the evidentiary standard needed to subject property to permanent seizure and restore the presumption of innocence in federal civil forfeiture proceedings.

Incentives Are All Wrong in the Federal Justice System

The ever-growing federal justice system is broken. Archaic policies from the 80s and 90s encourage corruption, waste taxpayer money, ruin the lives of nonviolent criminals, and ultimately contribute to the very problems they address.

Where to Question AG Nominee Loretta Lynch: Asset Forfeiture and More

After Eric Holder announced his resignation from Attorney General for the Obama administration, the President announced his nominee to replace him, Loretta Lynch. Ms. Lynch has experience as the chief federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, NY, and has a largely apolitical track record, leading experts to believe Lynch should have no issue securing Senate confirmation.

Justice Dept. Caught Scooping Up Civilian Data From Fake Cell Phone Towers

Washington, DC- The Justice Department is using fake cellphone towers on planes to collect metadata from thousands of innocent Americans without a warrant. The program is meant to target criminals, but the broad nature of the surveillance means that any phone that happens to automatically lock on to the tower's signal will have its data collected, without any suspicion of criminal activity.

The DOJ Goes after Big Banks - but why not the Fed?

I don’t often quote scripture in service of a point, but when I heard that the Justice Department is pursuing legal action against many of the world’s largest banks, charging them with illegal currency manipulation, I couldn’t help but think about this line from Matthew.:

FreedomWorks: What Ted Said!

Senator Ted Cruz took the Senate floor to demand the Department of Justice (DoJ) appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). If Attorney General Eric Holder fails to do so, Cruz maintained that he should be impeached for failing to enforce the law.
