Obama’s Misguided Push For Universal Preschool

Profiles in Education: The Smith Family

Mr. D and Mrs. R Smith are Californians working hard and doing their best to raise their young son and daughter. DS was raised with both public and private schooling, and RS completed all of her schooling through the public school system. When the time came to send their own children to school, however, they saw that the school situation was far from sunny and were concerned the public options wouldn't meet their child's needs. They decided that they would have to send their children to private schools.

Why I Support School Choice

There seems to be the misconception that school choice advocates are either vigilante parents or rebel educators. They visualize parents storming the school with pitchforks and torches to rescue their children. They picture teachers and administrators leaping ninja-like to the other side of the fence to rage against the system. They couldn’t be more wrong. Take me, for example. I have yet to have any children, I’m not connected to the educational system in any way, and I love school choice. For the record, I do not own a torch and have never leapt a wall.

National School Choice Week Kicks Off

National School Choice Week 2013 kicked off Friday night at a packed house in Phoenix, Arizona. The annual event, which this year runs from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, highlights a diverse selection of educational options for all kids. It made sense to launch this year’s effort in Arizona, a pioneer in school choice initiatives. With more than 7,000 attendees and thousands more watching online, this was the biggest kickoff ever for National School Choice Week. The occasion is just the first of more than 3,500 independently planned special events that will be held across all 50 states.

Mississippi Seeks A Brighter Future Through School Choice

Mississippi students have some of the weakest test scores in the nation but, as of today, the way is paved for better results and a brighter future. This morning, Mississippi’s House of Representatives passed a charter school bill (65-55), clearing one major hurdle. Now, differences between the House and Senate bills need to be resolved.

School Choice Is A Civil Rights Issue

Here we stand, in the days between Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and National School Choice Week. To many, these two events might have little in common. If you scratch the surface, however, they are inextricably linked. In fact, many would agree that school choice is the civil rights issue of our time.

StudentsFirst Report Card Shines Light on Education Reform

Education reform advocacy group StudentsFirst, led by school choice champion Michelle Rhee, has released their State Policy Report Card. This report card was designed “to evaluate the education laws and policies in place in each state.” The study used three forms of criteria for evaluation to find states in which schools: Elevate teaching, Empower Parents, and Spend Wisely & Govern Well.
