Washington State Tax Fact #2: Don’t Forget About Local Sales Taxes

The impact of the I-884 tax hike will hit some communities harder than others. I-884 would make Washington state’s sales tax rate the highest in the country at 7.5 percent. Even worse, when combined with local sales taxes, the billion dollar tax would push total sales tax rates up to 9.9 percent in some areas of Washington.

Higher local sales taxes are just one more reason why I-884 will further punish already overtaxed Washingtonians. The half million residents of Seattle, for example, would have an effective sales tax rate of 9.8 percent. Moreover, sales taxes are regressive, hitting poorer citizens hardest.

The bottom line: The Evergreen State is already overtaxed. I-884 will only make matters worse.
