Everyday 14,000 Americans Lose Their Coverage, Really?

On September 9, 2009 Barack Obama gave a speech on health care before a Joint Session of Congress in which he said that “every day, 14,000 Americans lose their coverage.”  In an email to its members on August 27, 2009 promoting vigils for those who can’t afford health insurance, MoveOn cited the same statistic of 14,000 people losing their coverage every day.  From where did this figure come and is it accurate?  MoveOn cites a study done by the Center for American Progress (CAP), a liberal think tank, in February of 2009 as the source of the statistic.

Putting Florida's Insurance on a Safer Course

With the hurricane season now underway, Florida’s insurance market is teetering on the brink of insolvency due to changes in insurance laws that have seen the nation’s large insurers leave the state, including State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, USAA and others. Now, the state-run Citizens Insurance Property Corporation has moved from “insurer of last resort” to “insurer of first resort,” the largest insurer in the state with the riskiest portfolio. Should a major hurricane hit, or even a series of smaller hurricanes, the potential liabilities Citizens faces threaten the state’s finances and raise the specter of new costs for consumers, who will be assessed new “surcharges” on their insurance policies—including not just homeowners insurance, but automobile and other insurance polices as well.

Florida FreedomWorks Day at the Capitol

As many communities were preparing for Tea Party Rallies,  a group of 30 FreedomWorks activists in Florida under the leadership of Field Coordinator John Hallman, decided to take it a step further by travelling to Tallahassee to meet with legislators in person. FreedomWorks activists came from all over Florida to deliver a message to legislators in person; "lower taxes, reduce regulations, and let the free market work!" The day started with activists being briefed on the most crucial issues facing Florida, including property insurance, telecom reform, tax hikes on everything from cigarettes to the internet, spending caps, property tax reductions, and judicial reforms. House Majority Leader Adam Hasner also spoke to the group to thank them for taking time to lobby legislators face-to-face. Majority Leader Hasner stressed the importance of citizen action to drive policy, and the effectiveness of activists taking time to come to Tallahassee. He also told the group that conservative House members were united to stop all tax hikes and bring consumer choices to property insurance and telecom.
