Coalition Letter Against Internet Sales Tax in a Lame Duck

FreedomWorks -- along with Americans for Prosperity, Heritage Action for America, and Americans for tax Reform -- released a coalition letter opposing a vote on the Internet sales tax during the lame-duck session of Congress. The issue is contentious, and pushing through a bill in the lame duck would allow little time for debate or discussion of these complicated issues and therefore decrease the level of accountability for the members.

The Lamest Duck of All: Republicans Shouldn't Push for Internet Sales Tax

The election might be over, but politics isn’t. As a lame-duck president, Barack Obama will use his remaining days in office to push any outstanding policy proposals, either through Congress, also now a lame duck, or by executive order.

Procedural Hurdle Threatens to Derail Internet Tax Freedom

This week, the Senate is poised to vote on a permanent extension of the Internet Tax Freedom Act. The Act, first enacted as a temporary measure in 1998, prohibits states and localities from taxing access to the internet, and has traditionally been extended a year at a time as part of budget negotiations.

The Internet Sales Tax Is Not Just about Taxes

As Black Friday gave way to Cyber Monday, the familiar complaints from physical retailers about the perils of online competition once more began to surface. At issue is the way internet sales, or more specifically remote sales, are taxed, with many retailers calling for new legislation to empower states to collect more taxes from online sellers.

The Internet Should Remain Free of Taxation

On September 30th, Congress approved a measure that would fund the government for the next 10 weeks, until December 11th, while a budget is negotiated for the new fiscal year. The measure contains a reauthorization of the internet taxation ban, which is good news; that is, until the issue is brought up again in December and the government will face another funding battle.

Keep the Internet Tax Free!

Since the early days of the internet, all levels of government have operated under a self-imposed ban on the taxation of internet access. The Internet Tax Freedom Act was first signed into law in 1998, and since then has been repeatedly reauthorized to ensure that Americans have unhampered access to the most powerful tool for information and innovation since the Gutenberg printing press.

The Online Sales Tax Rears Its Ugly Head… Again

Americans have been shopping online for 20 years now. What started as a curiosity has become routine and essential for millions of people, and the days when you had to physically track down a copy of a rare book or record have become an increasingly distant memory. The sheer convenience of online shopping is breathtaking, but that very convenience has made sites like Amazon.com as many enemies as they have friends. The retail lobby, infuriated by the discovery of a better business model, have spent years seeking a government solution to their declining sales.

Internet consumers beware!

The internet has undergone a great deal of change lately, ranging from being subject to new net neutrality regulations that reclassified the internet as a common carrier. It only seems fitting that with all this new, though not necessarily good, change there should be a new tax implemented somewhere.
