The ad text reads:

PROPERTY TAXES
ARE RISING BY DOUBLE DIGITS.
THE SCHOOLS ARE FACING A
$2.3 MILLION DEFICIT.
ANY SENSIBLE PERSON WOULD REALIZE
THIS IS NEITHER THE TIME NOR PLACE TO EXPAND
THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM AT TAXPAYERS’ EXPENSE.

BUT, THAT’S JUST WHAT
Senator Jim Condos and
Representative George Cross
ARE DOING….

Sen. Jim Condos and Rep. George Cross are playing leading roles in the attempt to expand the Vermont Public
ool system – at taxpayer expense – by funding the takeover of private childcare services for 3 & 4 year olds.
• Money for these activities comes out of the Education Fund – two thirds of which comes from our property taxes.
• When all districts get fully into the Pre-K business, the price could reach as high as $70 million.
• As school districts start creating new publicly financed Pre-K programs, independent day care centers will either
become servants of the public schools, or be forced out of business due to unfair competition from “free”
government programs.
• Church-affiliated preschools will, of course, be excluded from any “collaborative” program,
This policy is totally out of touch with the realities facing Burlington property taxpayers and the crisis facing our schoo
gets. It will ultimately reduce childcare options for parents. And, what’s worse, all this was done through use of a
slative trick that denied voters the benefit of a full and open debate in either the House or the Senate.
