Support I-912 and Stop New Gas Taxes!

Washington FreedomWorks and its political action committee, the League of Freedom Voters, led the fight to defeat Initiative 884 in November, 2004. I-884 was a proposed increase in the state sales tax. Despite a $3.5 million campaign blitz by the proponents, the voters overwhelmingly rejected the new taxes by a 60%-40% margin. The overriding message of this victory was that increased taxes hurt working families and cost jobs, and that government needs to be accountable with the money it currently receives before asking for more.

In the legislative session immediately following this massive defeat, Governor Christine Gregoire and the state legislature ignored the message sent by the voters and increased general fund taxes by $500 million and the gas tax by 9.5 cents a gallon without enacting strong accountability measures. Rubbing salt into the wounds, they included emergency clauses into the bills that eliminated the public’s right of referendum.

Undaunted, the sponsors of Initiative 912 qualified for the ballot with a record number of signatures to repeal the 9.5 cent gas tax increase. Like the I-884 campaign, the “tax and spend” establishment is well-financed and will be spending millions to defeat I-912. The only way to ensure passage of I-912 is to continue the strong grassroots effort all the way up to Election Day.

Washington FreedomWorks supports I-912 as a means to send another strong message to Olympia that we want lower taxes and more government accountability.
