Focus on Winning Issues in 2014: ObamaCare and School Choice

The year that we are bidding farewell to has been nothing short of creepy when one considers it through the prism of personal freedom. As I write this, I'm fairly certain the NSA is watching me through the lights on my Christmas tree, which also seem to be blinking "What are you wearing?" in Morse code. We have a unilateral edict egomaniac in the White House and we are mere hours away from the IRS being able to demand your financials AND your latest colonoscopy pics (trust me, they'll get there).

FreedomCast - National School Choice Week 2014 with Andrew Campanella

On today’s edition of the FreedomCast, Andrew Campanella joins me to discuss National School Choice Week, some of the myths and misgivings about school choice and why every conversation about education reform should begin in the living room or at the kitchen table.

California Teacher Stands Up to Unions

For many teachers, their job is a calling. It is what they love to do, a profession for which they have worked and studied, and at which they want to continue. What happens, then, when a good teacher is forced to give money to a group which she opposes in order to keep her job? In the case of California’s Rebecca Friedrichs, she is fighting back.

Victory for Louisiana School Vouchers?

DC bureaucrats are attempting once again to interfere with the educational choice of parents. Do states have the right to direct education for the students that reside there? If the latest battle in Louisiana is any indication, some in the federal government won't be happy with anything other than invasion of your rights.

Former Anti-Voucher Advocate Now Advocates For Vouchers and School Choice

There is a lot of misinformation about school choice, and sometimes even wise and well intentioned people are misled.  As school choice success stories begin to go mainstream though, more people are championing the ideas of empowering students and parents. Just ask Ann Duplessis, former anti-voucher advocate who is now at the forefront of a group fighting for vouchers.

School Choice is a Winning Issue

Demographics matter, and after the disappointing 2012 election results, the GOP has decided it may be a good idea to focus on growing the party by reaching out to the youth and minority communities.  Ignoring certain demographics will continue to hurt the party, as will ignoring key issues.  Just like during the 2012 campaign cycle, the GOP is leaving out a key issue that could not only grow the party, but more importantly, could help millions of children receive a better education. I'm referring to school choice.

Friedman Foundation Study Focuses on How Parents Choose the Right Schools for their Children

There are a lot of reasons that parents choose the schools that they do for their children. For some parents, it is a clear decision, for some, it is a decision which is agonized over. The Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice recently released a study on the factors that go into these decisions, and the answers might surprise you.

How is School Choice Like Grocery Shopping?

Imagine that when you woke up today, Congress had passed a new law to handle where and how you shop for groceries. Instead of shopping at the store you prefer, you now have to shop at one store chosen for you by a Grocery Shopping Committee based on where you live. No longer can you shop the sale ads to get the best bargains for the groceries you want.

Losing Literacy

Until WWII, American children learned to read by utilizing phonics. Words were not learned by memorization but rather, children learned that each letter had a corresponding sound. When put together with other sounds, a word was made. This method had proved to be extraordinarily successful since America’s founding and two centuries beyond. It was this method that allowed Benjamin Franklin to be a proficient reader before ever stepping foot into a classroom.

Teachers' Union Fights Parent Trigger Laws in California

When a school is failing, it seems reasonable that parents can effect change in that school. In California, the Parent Trigger law enables parents to overhaul a school if it is failing their children.
