FreedomWorks Targets Key House Republicans to Vote NO on the “Boehner Debt and Tax Hike” Plan

WASHINGTON, DC- Today, FreedomWorks is making a final push effort on Capitol Hill to convince key House Republicans to vote against the Boehner Plan. FreedomWorks staffers delivered the “Top Ten Reasons to Support ‘Cut, Cap, Balance’ Over Boehner Plan” to as many Congressional offices as possible, with specific on-the-fence House Republicans in mind. A minimum of six Representatives need to switch their votes to “No” in order for the Boehner Plan to be voted down.

“We have been getting incredible amounts of calls from our activists weighing in on the debt battle and requesting copies of the ‘Cut, Cap, Balance Pledge,’” commented Matt Kibbe, President of FreedomWorks. “They have made it very clear that elected Republicans remaining loyal to their principles of lower taxes, free markets, and long term deficit reduction will be rewarded at the ballot box next election.”

FreedomWorks strongly opposes the “Boehner Debt and Tax Hike Plan,” which would establish a super-committee of 12 elected legislators from the House and Senate to determine future spending cuts and tax increases.  “The super-committee will effectively marginalize Republicans in Congress actually committed to fixing Washington’s spending problem in the long-term,” explained Max Pappas, FreedomWorks VP of Public Policy and Government Affairs. “Even if Speaker Boehner appoints three limited-government Republicans, only one of the Senators that McConnell appoints would need to side with the six Democrats on the committee to put forward a plan with tax hikes. So the committee sets the stage for a future tax hike.”

The “Cut, Cap, Balance Act” is the most responsible approach to shrinking the debt and permanently changing the culture of spending in Washington. The Act would make it impossible to raise the debt limit without immediate spending cuts, enforceable spending caps, and passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution.

Over 35,000 FreedomWorks activists have already signed onto the Cut, Cap, Balance Pledge, and made over 5,000 calls to Congressional offices. Through the online grassroots organizing tool FreedomConnector, over 250 district office visits have been completed across the country. Over 100 tea party leaders from 40 states visited DC Senate offices to ask Senators to sign the Cut, Cap, Balance Pledge during last month’s FreedomWorks Activist Boot camp.

FreedomWorks plans to intensify its efforts to support the “Cut, Cap, Balance Act” with continued letters, emails and phone calls to House and Senate offices, DC Congressional office visits, district office visits, and a comprehensive earned media campaign.
