GE's Crony Capitalism: The Saga Continues

The other week, I blogged here about G.E.'s crony capitalism tactics that take advantage of tax code loopholes and other special treatment for big corporations by big government.  FreedomWorks has long been beating the drum against rent-seekers like GE and Duke Energy, so it was a little surprising that yesterday's  New York Times article, "G.E.'s Strategies Let It Avoid Taxes Altogether,"

GE Cronies Cuddle Up to Tax Code

Business Week does a great job of outlining GE's tax code shenanigans. In sum, the company has laid out big money to powerful DC lobbyists to take advantage of and keep various breaks and loopholes in the tax code.  This isn't anything new or particularly surprising, but it is a great example of what happens when you have a toxic combination of a long and complex tax code and rent-seeking corporations who have been able to carve out special treatment at the expense of individuals.

Scorecard on Government Spending

Recently, President Obama reiterated the necessity for increased government “investing” in our economy.  The way the President’s argument is shaped it seems like government has been standing out of the way, back in the shadows, just waiting to emerge amidst the calamity created by an unfettered deregulated private sector.  The only way we will be competitive in the successive years, of course, is if we spend more taxpayer money on liberal pet projects and “invest” in special interest groups slobbering to indulge in the government subsidy trough.

Think Tank Studies in Real Life

It's not everyday that we get to see the hard work of free market researchers and analysts demonstrated so vividly.  That's why this post is so special.  Because, on the very same day that the Mackinac Center for Public Policy published this paper on the striking relationship between smuggling and cigarette taxes, we have this story about a man caught trafficking 193 untaxed cartons of cigarettes.

Sign the Petition: No Lame Duck!

Rumors are swirling in Washington, D.C. about a potential "Lame Duck" session that could be held right after the November elections and before the new Congress is sworn-in. If liberals are thrown out of power in Congress this election cycle, the pressure will be that much greater and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi will pull out all the stops as a last gasp to enact their socialist agenda. Specifically, the far left will be doing whatever they can to: 1. Pass the Cap and Trade Energy Tax Hike! 2. Slap American Taxpayers with another "Stimulus" Bailout Scheme!
