Some Senate Republicans Join Democrats to Allow D.C.'s Individual Mandate to Remain on the Books

On Wednesday, the Senate voted on an amendment offered by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to the most recent minibus, H.R. 6147, that would have prohibited the use of funds to carry out the individual health insurance mandate recently passed by D.C. Council. Noncompliance with D.C.’s individual mandate could result in the seizure of private property.

In the Case of Fair Sentencing Act Retroactivity, USSC Report Lends Resounding Endorsement

Retroactive application of the Fair Sentencing Act (FSA) which became law in 2010 and reduced the sentencing disparity for crack and powder cocaine from 100-to-1 to 18-to-1 has been a hotly contested issue in the criminal justice space. The primary concern from those opposed to retroactivity, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions, is that allowing offenders to petition the court for a review and reduction in their sentence could result in violent criminals being released to the streets, putting public safety at risk.

How Ted Cruz Rescued Republicans on Obamacare

Finally, Republicans are getting smart on Obamacare. It took one of the savviest Republican senators — Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas with an assist from Sen. Mike Lee of Utah — to get the GOP to figure out how to replace Obamacare, reduce premiums and save money for the government — all without alienating millions of voters. He’s pulled the Republicans’ fannies out of the fire by flipping a political losing strategy into a big time winner.

Consumer Freedom Option Included in Senate Health Insurance Bill, but ObamaCare Remains Law of the Land

After a long wait, the Senate Budget Committee finally unveiled the latest iteration of the Better Care Reconciliation Act, H.R. 1628. There are a few things to like, but, on the whole, the Senate is bill still fails to live of to more than seven years of promises to repeal ObamaCare. It remains an amendment to the 2010 health insurance reform law.

Hey, Senate Republicans, Give Patients the Consumer Freedom Option

"For years, the American people have been calling on Washington to build a bridge away from Obamacare. For years, Democrats prevented the Senate from passing legislation to do so. But in just a moment, that will change," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., declared in December 2015 before the upper chamber voted to pass a reconciliation bill that repealed much of Obamacare.

Build a Better Bill: GOP Senate Must Save ObamaCare Repeal Once Again

It’s no secret that my organization, FreedomWorks, had serious concerns with the American Health Care Act. The amendment negotiated by Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.) and Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) to allow states to define their own community rating and essential health benefits was a step in the right direction, but further improvements must be made as the bill works its way through the Senate. As Meadows said during the House debate over the AHCA, “The American people are going to care about one thing, and that’s premiums going down.”
