A Hidden Threat to Online Freedom: The Lost Balance of Fair Use and Intellectual Property

The current imbalance of our intellectual property system allows copyright law to strangle free speech and innovation. Ideally, the intellectual property system would strike a balance between the rights of the intellectual owner and those of consumer. Intended to support the property’s creator, copyright laws can promote fair compensation and allow for the continued creation of content. At the same time, intellectual property systems are designed so that after the creator is paid after the work enters the public domain and aids in the creation of new works. This balanced is threatened by the misuse and misunderstanding of the roles of copyright and fair use.

Fury Over School Regulations: It’s the Department of Education, Stupid!

Last month's proposed rules on school accountability are yet another reminder that it’s time for federal bureaucrats at the Department of Education to get their hands out of our education system. In its latest power grab, the department seeks to enact top-down measures that would remove authority from the hands of teachers, school districts, and state government. The regulation would impose Education Department-mandated accountability measures promulgating federal government oversight over student and school achievement.

Key Vote NO on S. 1252, the Global Food Security Act of 2016

As one of our over 5.7 million FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and ask them to vote NO on S. 1252, the Global Food Security Act of 2016. This legislation is expected to be voted on in the House today. S.1252 is being considered under expedited procedures normally reserved for legislation that does not have a large fiscal footprint. The Made in America Energy Strategy Saves Money and Keeps Terrorists at Bay

Every president since Richard Nixon has promised to make America energy independent, but we still import 9 million barrels of oil a day with much of it coming from the Middle East and OPEC. Join Us This July for Our Justice Reform Campaign on Twitter!

The United States is THE world leader in incarceration. Over the last 10 years, however, the justice reform community has pushed in the direction of smart, evidence-based methods to reduce crime and improve public safety. States like Texas and Georgia, and more recently Alaska, Kansas, and Maryland, have discovered value in moving away from the “Tough on Crime” stance of the 80s and seeking reforms that reduce monetary costs and bring about significant savings for taxpayers. Champions of the cause like Senator Rand Paul, Senator Mike Lee, and Representative Justin Amash, are leaders of strong conservative and constitutional values, all scoring lifetime ratings of 99 percent or 100 percent on the FreedomWorks’ Congressional scorecard.
