Liberal Group Bars Alabama Schoolhouse Door

The civil rights issue of our era is improving America’s schools. It is essential that all kids, rich and poor, have the chance to achieve the American dream. To work toward that end, Gov. Robert Bentley recently signed the Alabama Accountability Act. The school choice package allows families with children attending failing schools to receive tax credits to help pay for attendance at a different public school or private school.

The Top 20 Things Hipsters Could Buy Instead of Obamacare

A couple of days ago, I gave hipsters a primer on why they shouldn't go out of their way to sign up for the Obamacare health insurance exchanges. In short, the health care exchanges feed on the supple, easy-to-insure flesh of the young and virile in order to pay out all of the many expenses associated with housing, feeding, caring for and picking up after Baby Boomers.

Seattle Mayor Covers Up Study Supporting Coal Export Terminals

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn was shown this week to have attempted to conceal the results of a study he commissioned that examined the economic impact of expanding coal trains and exports from Washington's ports. This move is especially damning in light of his December press conference touting the study. McGinn, a vocal critic of an expansion of coal train traffic in the Pacific Northwest, has been accused of burying the report because it did not support his position and his anti-energy agenda.

Oregon's Plan To Set Up A College Tuition Ponzi Scheme

A lot of ink has been spilled in covering the latest cockamamie idea coming out of Oregon; the so-called 'Pay it forward, Pay it back' college tuition scheme. What's striking is that the state legislature and one US Senator are giving serious consideration to what amounts to a Social Security style Ponzi Scheme - a massive redistribution plan that is doomed to fail.  This is all in an effort to create a utopian pipe dream that would magically erase the terms 'debt' and 'tuition' from our lexicon when discussing higher education.

Flashback: The Founders on the Necessity of a Free Press

With Congress attempting to define journalism again, it seems like a good time to revisit the whole "free press" thing. Understanding why the founders thought a free press was essential ultimately helps us determine whether federal overreach into protected liberties is appropriate. In 1799, James Madison explained:

In the Name of National Security

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. -C.S. Lewis News breaks this morning that the NSA has the ability to monitor 75% of the nation's internet traffic at once. They can watch what 75% of Americans are doing at any one time online. Think on that for a moment.
