The New Luddites

Today, Ned Ludd and his followers are best known from the term Luddite: a much needed contribution to the English language that expresses fear or hatred of technology. But while the word has since taken on the connotations of a back-to-nature, Druidic-like disdain for modernity, it should be remembered that the original motivations for the Luddite movement were purely economic. The textile artisans saw their livelihood threatened by advances in mechanization, and lashed out to protect their own interests.

Sequestration Might Turn White House Chef Into a Spy or Something

It has been a harrowing six weeks for the nation, what with the sequestrapocalyse and all. As of March 1, our underfunded federal government was forced to slash indispensible initiatives such as robot squirrels, pickle specifications and cowboy poetry.

Wind Subsidies: Spinning Out of Control

Since the early 1990s, the federal government has buttressed the wind energy industry through a series of programs and subsidies. The flagship program has been the Wind Production Tax Credit (PTC). This program provided a subsidy of 2.2 cents for every kilowatt-hour produced by wind utilities.

Ohio Health Care Freedom Act Tabled By Republicans

Recently I reported on Ohio Republican Representative Barbara Sears’ failing to support The Health Care Freedom Act (HCFA) bill that would help defend Ohioans from Obamacare penalties.  Currently the chances of the HCFA being considered for an additional hearing are weakening, as it has not been listed on the committee schedule.

Obama Parties While Americans Struggle

Who doesn’t love some Memphis soul music? Certainly, no red-blooded American could feel that way. However, in the current economy, we are all being forced to cut back on things that we enjoy.  Entertainment expenses are on the chopping block around the country. Concert attendance is down as people are cutting back on non-essentials. It’s not just musical events, either.

Updated Budget Report Card: Obama's Budget So Bad, It's Illegal

The White House finally released President Obama's budget plan, two months later than required by law (he has ignored the legal deadline for submitting a budget four out of his five years in office).  Predictably, it wasn't exactly worth the wait. The Obama budget doubled down on all of his previous unserious proposals, actually increasing spending in the short term, while continuing to act upon his rhetoric of soaking the rich.  And once again, it never reaches balance.  Ever.Under Obama's plan:

FreedomWorks Responds to President Obama’s “April Fool’s” Budget

Washington, DC- Following the release of President Obama’s budget plan, FreedomWorks Vice President of Public Policy, Dean Clancy, released the following statement: “Is this a belated April Fool’s joke? Not only was the President’s budget turned in after both houses of Congress passed their respective budget plans, but it proposes to hike taxes by another trillion dollars, never balances, and manages to increase spending next year by $154 billion.” In 2011 and 2012, the President’s budget received zero votes in the Senate.

The Agony of Elite

The best read of the weekend was a New York Times opinion column. No, I’m not kidding. Not only did token conservative Ross Douthat blow the lid on the self-perpetuating elitism of the Ivy League, he did it in the pages of the elites’ favorite Sunday morning newspaper.
