Issue Analysis

Taxing in a Recession?

Earlier this month, Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell proposed new tax increases to shrink the upcoming 1.7 billion dollar budget deficit. Governor Rendell has already resorted to Orwellian tactics. In an effort to collect from people who owe back-taxes, the Governor proposed an amnesty program which reduces the penalties and half the interest will be waived before the June 18th deadline. The State spent three million dollars in advertisements for this program, and the video is ‘Big-Brother-esque’ warning citizens “We know who you are.”

American citizens appeal ObamaCare

The American people have come together in an attempt to stop ObamaCare. They feel not only is it a horrible idea, but that it’s extremely unconstitutional. A website was created to rally as many citizens as possible to support a lawsuit filed against the President to overturn the new bill. The site represents almost 32,000 Americans who have signed up in an effort to overturn ObamaCare in congress. They feel that the states should decide their own health care laws as opposed to the federal government.

The Future of Fiscal Irresponsibility

As Matthew Clemente pointed out in his last entry, the national debt will surpass GDP as soon as 2012. Unfortunately, it gets more frightening—according to the 2008 Financial Report of the U.S. Government, the government has already promised $65 trillion in Medicare and Social Security—more than the GDP of the entire world. Even this figure is already outdated: consider the additional promised payouts with the passing of the healthcare bill.
