Obama Increases Spending for Special-Interest Predators

Democracy and Power 114: The Power PlayersWho actually controls the force of government? Politicians and interest groups control the American political process. Special-interest groups - i.e. big business, small business, big unions, education, seniors, and a multitude of others - seek favors: tax breaks, subsidies, exclusive legislation, etc. Interest groups give enormous amounts of money to political campaigns and receive gigantic benefits in return.

Revamping Higher Education: The $10,000 College Degree

Student loan debt has risen to approximately $1 trillion, surpassing America's credit card debt. In the midst of prolonged economic downturn, the cost of higher education continues to creep upwards. In an effort to mitigate the looming damage of a deflated higher education bubble, Texas Governor, Rick Perry, asked Texas colleges to come up with a way to provide a $10,000 college degree.  It's been a year since Governor Perry issued the charge and several colleges have risen to the challenge.

Michigan Poised to Become a Right-to-Work State

On the heels of two big wins for workplace freedom in Michigan, it looks like the state might be taking an even bigger step: becoming a right-to-work state. There are currently twenty-three right to work states, and the addition of Michigan would be a huge boon for workplace freedom.

Robust School Choice is the Path to Graduation

For the first time, the U.S. Department of Education has released information on graduation rate by state. This year, states used common measurements, making these comparisons possible.  "By using this new measure, states will be more honest in holding schools accountable and ensuring that students succeed," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement Monday.

Fiscal Cliff: Fairness Defined

President Obama (D-IL) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), are determined to raise taxes on the wealthiest 2% of Americans, as part of their class warfare agenda. Speaker Boehner should stand strong and restrain government by insisting that the existing tax rates be extended and the level already-agreed cuts remain. Holding taxes the same, and dealing with the budget in an orderly process is a step toward economic fairness.

Building a Machine To Win A Culture

People are reading entirely too much into President Obama's re-election. He and Organizing for America, the Democratic Party, and allied groups simply beat Romney and the Republican National Committee, state parties, and aliied groups at getting out the vote. The reason Obama was able to do that is not because of policy or growing popular satisfaction with socialism. He convinced people that he was on their team, and they were on his. After that, nothing Romney said made a bit of difference.

Rampant Wasteful Spending in Pentagon Budget

Some lawmakers claim that we cannot afford to cut a dime of Pentagon spending. That is simply untrue. Like every federal government department, the Department of Defense is susceptible to wasteful spending and pet projects. Perhaps more so because many lawmakers do not seriously scrutinize the Pentagon budget for fear of being perceived as “weak on defense.”
