Recent Tornadoes and the Broken Window Fallacy

In the wake of the deadly tornadoes throughout the Midwest and Massachusetts, our hearts and thoughts are with those harmed by these terrible tragedies, which have cost hundreds of deaths and destroyed infrastructure, homes and businesses.

Key Vote YES on H.ADMT.397 to Reduce Department of Homeland Security Appropriations By 10 Percent

Dear FreedomWorks member, As one of our million-plus FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to contact your representatives and ask them to vote YES on H. AMDT.397 on H.R. 2017, the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2012. The amendment offered by Rep. Rokita (R-Ind.) would cut homeland security funding by 10 percent across the board. The only exception is funding for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to enforce border security. The total savings would be $2.47 billion off the base bill and $3.54 billion from current spending levels.

The Fight Has Just Begun: The Internet Sales Tax

On Tuesday, Governor Rick Perry issued his first veto of the year, vetoing HB 2403, an Internet sales tax bill which FreedomWorks opposed. By vetoing HB 2403 Governor Perry has saved taxpayers and business alike from burdensome regulations and new taxes. In vetoing the legislation Perry cited that a key reason for his veto was that there was no consensus between lawmakers, tech experts, consumers and retailers.

The Light Bulb Police

If one enjoys having a well-lit home at a reasonable price, one best run to the nearest hardware store and stock up on traditional incandescent light bulbs as if they were going out of style. Because due a 2007 decision by President George W. Bush, the common incandescent light bulb will be officially so last year in 2012. What is the government approved substitute?

Rules for Killing Rogues

Moral and Legal Authority A government with moral and legal authority promulgates written rules and universally, impartially and uniformly enforces the rules, which provide a predictable and stable legal order on which to base economic and personal decisions.  The law prevails, not the proclamation or arbitrary decision of a ruler, government bureaucrat, the enforcer (e.g., policeman) or judge.

Debt, Spending and Mendacity

Democracy and Power 108:  Obfuscation  Wherever politics intrudes upon economic life, political success is readily attained by saying what people like to hear rather than what is demonstrably true. Instead of safeguarding truth and honesty, the state then tends to become a major source of insincerity and mendacity. – Hans F. Sennholz

Democrats Plan To Have No Plan

If we do not act now, the failure of leadership by President Obama and Democrats in Congress will lead our Medicare system to certain bankruptcy. We can save Medicare for current seniors and make sure it's around for our children and grandchildren by supporting Representative Paul Ryan's plan.In his "Path to Prosperity," Rep. Ryan has laid out a plan to save Medicare by creating a patient-centered system for seniors that gives them more choices for their health care while reining in exploding costs.

Bold Actions by Bold Senators

Since the Tea Party made so much noise at the polls last fall, we have seen a lot of bold action from Members of the House of Representatives to try to rein in spending, reduce the deficit, and limit the overall scope of government. Unfortunately, Senate leadership is not taking heed and has failed to truly address the major issues facing our country. Despite our looming national debt ($14.3 trillion), they have not proposed any major cuts in spending; they have not reformed entitlement programs; and they have not proposed a budget, balanced or otherwise.

PODCAST: The EPA Regulatory Trainwreck

Click to listen! I sit down with FreedomWorks Chief Economist Dr. Wayne Brough to discuss the upcoming EPA "Regulatory Trainwreck" - so called because there are so many regulations in it that they can't even sum it up with any other word. The Executive Branch was unable to pass cap and trade, and has instead given power to regulatory agencies, devoid of congressional oversight, in order to skirt accountability and push their agenda.

Military Spending Cuts are Necessary

Millions of Americans have become unified by the message of lower taxes and less government spending over the past few years. Our voices were heard last November when a significant number of deficit hawks were elected to Congress. Many signaled that they were willing to put every item of the budget on the table. Yes, that includes military  spending. As Sen.
