Obama Misses the Mark on Climate Change Policy

Today, President Obama spoke before the United Nations to address the issue of climate change. In a speech in which he highlighted the United States’ record on energy policy, the president also called on other nations to join him in his “urgent” fight against climate change. Seen by many as a lead-in to this week’s G20 Summit and December’s climate summit in Copenhagen, the speech revived President Obama’s domestic energy initiatives at a time when most of the public debate has been dominated by health care.

Liberal Mathematics- Bad Idea Then = Good Idea Now

In 1993, with the help of then Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, President Clinton introduced a plan to reform the American health care system.  The plan—and the debate that ensued as a result of it—captivated the nation.  As a member of the Senate, Tom Daschle joined the liberal quest for universal health care.  After months of disputing the particulars of the bill, however, Daschle found himself holding the short end of the health care reform stick.  President Clinton’s efforts were declared dead

FCC Misguided on Net Neutrality

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced today that it will revive the debate over net neutrality and issue new regulations concerning network management. The new regulations will be designed to prevent content discrimination and maintain network management transparency with the ultimate goal to “safeguard the free and open internet,” according to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski.  The announcement emphasized the importance of the internet in innovation and investment as well as the role it plays in entrepreneurship.

McConnell, Pence, Cantor, Praise Tea Party Protests

BY David Weigel

It’s hardly a surprise now when Republican leaders align themselves with the Tea Party movement, and the Value Voters Summit has been full of it. Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) got closest to the spirit of the crowd — which had heard wildly diverging estimates of the 9/12 march on Washington all day. “If the national media covers this like it covered the events last weekend,” said Pence, “the headline will be: ‘Dozens attend Value Voters Summit!’”

FCC Calls for New Regulations on Internet Raise Alarm

Today, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski announced the agency will initiate a series of rulemakings to create a new regulatory framework for the internet.  The new regulations could have a sweeping reach, affecting everything from content providers, bandwidth usage, and the emerging mobile network for internet access.  The announcement rekindles the net neutrality debate, with the FCC indicating it will take a more pro-active role in shaping the future of the internet.
