The Place for Pragmatism

I hit up the Reason magazine forum on libertarianism yesterday. (Mike Gravel was there! How could I resist?) As expected, it was pleasantly entertaining and somewhat silly – but didn't offer much hope for more practical-minded limited-government advocates. Much of the discussion got sidetracked on ancillary issues (Is it better to work in a factory than an office? Whither the poker vote?), and domestic policy was reduced, more or less, to talk about which federal agencies should be the first to get the guillotine. That's a lot of fun –- goodness knows the Department of Education is an under-performing bureaucratic behemoth, and getting rid of it used to be a conservative hobby-horse -- but it hardly takes into account current political realities. I'm certainly in favor of pushing boundaries, but it's unlikely to do much good unless it's grounded in something at least somewhat resembling the current political playing field.

On Energy, the Path is Clear: Lower Taxes, Less Regulation

Yesterday, I listened in to a blogger conference call with Peter Robertson, Vice Chairman of Chevron's board. Much of the call naturally centered on gas prices and, of course, the basic issues of supply and demand which drive pump prices. I can't say I agreed with his statements about the need for biofuels (I've been pretty clear on http://www.reason.com/news/show/

Key Vote "No" H.R. 6049, the Energy and Tax Extenders Act of 2008

On behalf of hundreds of thousands of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to vote “No” on H.R. 6049, the “Energy and Tax Extenders Act of 2008.”  H.R. 6049 extends more than 30 provisions in the tax code, many of them having to do with energy policy.  The bill attempts to cover the costs of the extensions by raising revenue through changes in the tax law relating to deferred income and the worldwide allocation of interest.  Yet, on net, the legislation generates roughly $2 billion in new taxes.

Dean Baker's Free Trade Problem

Dean Baker thinks we shouldn't bother with free trade because it's not really free trade -- it only affects low-income workers, right? -- and because IP rights for things like pharmaceuticals are a Big Bad Conspiracy to keep poor people sick.  Too bad that, as Megan McArdle points out, this is pretty much nonsense.

Pump Prices Pumped Up

Here's a video of Nancy Pelosi complaining about high gas prices just a few weeks ago.  Indeed, we've seen steep jumps in price at the pump.  But what was Pelosi doing just a few months before?  Advocating tax credits for gas stations that pump ethanol, as well as additional tax credits for ethanol and biodiesel producers.

Everybody's Looking for Something

What makes a bill good? Lots of handouts for special interests -- or so says Sen. Saxby Chambliss. Reason's Jacob Sullum has the full quote and analysis.

Not Warming to McCain

John McCain has been talking up his global warming plan this week. Needless to say, I'm not impressed.  It's expensive, of course, and it's based on a lot of unfounded, alarmist scare-rhetoric. But more than that, it's inconsistent. On one hand, he buys into the apocalyptic hype of the green crowd. On the other hand, he offers a plan that doesn't give that crowd a lot of what they say is necessary.  In other words, he's offering a plan that will please no one.

Key Vote "No" Domestic Spending Amendment to H.R. 2642: the "Patriot Tax"

On behalf of hundreds of thousands of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to VOTE “NO” on the Domestic Spending Amendment (Amendment 3) to H.R. 2642, the “Patriot Tax” amendment, to be considered as part of the Iraq war supplemental.  The proposed income tax surcharge on upper income earners that purports to pay for the increased spending called for in the supplemental bill would more accurately be titled a “Small Business Tax.”
