FreedomWorks Applauds South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s stance against REAL ID

FreedomWorks is pleased that Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina sent a letter today to Homeland Security Secretary Michal Chertoff explaining why South Carolina will not comply with the REAL ID Act. This law was passed without debate in Congress, and contains billions of dollars in unfunded federal mandates.

Where does Lieberman meet McCain? (Answer: Iraq)

BY David Harsanyi

Sen. Joe Lieberman is one of the most polarizing figures in American politics. Hated by the progressive left and bizarrely embraced by many on the right, his story tells us plenty about the state the politics in America. None of it pretty.

Hundreds Drawn to Celebrate Ruling on OLF

BY Kate Wiltrout

The setting was humble and wholesome, and so was the food. Fresh-cooked pork barbecue, green beans and homemade pound cake, all served on paper plates at picnic tables inside a giant barn. The people, too, were humble. Even on a Saturday night when they could gleefully have celebrated their David-vs.-Goliath victory over the U.S. Navy, they refrained. Instead of high-fives, hundreds of people exchanged thanks – first to God, then for one another, and finally, with a standing ovation, to the lawyers who represented them in court.

Flood Insurance Negotiations Still Soggy as Sunset Deadline Nears

BY R.J. Lehmann

Massive storms that swept across the northern Great Plains and powered floodwaters that breached several levees in the lower Mississippi River Valley the week of March 17 may have reignited awareness of protections offered by the National Flood Insurance Program. But efforts on the federal front to revise and reform the 40-year-old NFIP prior to its scheduled Sept. 30 expiration remain deadlocked, industry sources say.

Two Economic Plans, Same Bad Idea

Senator Barack Obama delivered a major speech yesterday in New York outlining his preferred policies for regulating financial markets.  Senator Obama called for “guiding the market's invisible hand with a higher principle,” and new regulations,” to ensure that we are not doomed to repeat a cycle of bubble and bust again and again.”  Obama is calling for returning to the failed polices of a previous era: government central planning of the economy.

Here We Go Again - Another Cigarette Tax Increase for Oregon

Some people never learn. Even after the abject failure of Measure 50 last fall, when voters told Governor Kulongoski that they didn’t higher cigarette taxes for unnecessary programs, he’s going to try again. Kulongoski promised in his state of the state address last Friday to renew his efforts to get the tax hike passed. TAKE ACTION and tell Governor Kulongoski that a bad idea last year is still a bad idea.

Just Wondering

Was I the only one who noticed that in Obama's speech on financial regulation, he said: Deregulation of the telecommunications sector, for example, fostered competition, but also contributed to massive over-investment. And then about 5 minutes later said: And to ensure that America stays on the cutting edge, we'll expand broadband access... Too much! Too little! Too... !

However You Can Get It

A few hours ago, Barack Obama gave a speech on financial regulation. As always, he's a strong speaker.  But I have to take issue what some of what he said.  For example:

Hand Out Across the Aisle

The Boston Herald has this heartwarming story about how earmarks can bring old friends and different political parties together.  The apparently very philanthropic Democratic Congressman Bill Delahunt secured a $1.1 million earmark for his old friend, former  Republican Congressman  Amory Houghton, to protect Houghton's expensive waterfront home from flooding.
