A Small Victory in the Fight for Justice Reform

Included in the handful of conservative policy victories at the end of 2015 was the passage of the Wrongful Convictions Tax Relief Act, which was introduced by Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Texas). The bill was included in the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, otherwise known as the "tax extenders" package. In July, FreedomWorks released a letter of support for the Wrongful Convictions Tax Relief Act.

19 Ridiculous Federal Criminal Laws and Regulations

One of the more interesting aspects of FreedomWorks' justice reform project is studying the over-criminalization. It is an issue that many want to avoid, preferring instead to focus their efforts on other very worthy issues like sentencing and corrections reform. Of course, we support these efforts. With 4,500 to 5,000 federal criminal statutes and as many as 400,000 regulations carrying criminal penalties, over-criminalization is a problem, and it is one that does not get nearly enough attention.

How ObamaCare Destabilized the Insurance Market

By now, most people realize that the Affordable Care Act has not done much to help bring down the cost of medical care. In fact, insurance plans keep getting more expensive every year. Because of these failings, the administration has consistently had trouble getting people to sign up on the exchanges. Still, there’s one provision of ObamaCare that has remained popular despite its other failings: the requirement that insurers cover preexisting conditions.

Don't Let Falsehoods Derail Justice Reform

In a recent interview, National Association of Assistant United States Attorneys (NAAUSA) President Steve Cook criticized legislation, the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act, that would make modest changes to federal sentencing laws and require a data-driven approach to reduce prisoners' risk of recidivism through rehabilitative programs. Cook's comments about the legislation, which has already cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee, were directed at proposed changes to 18 U.S.C. § 924(c) and the Armed Career Criminal Act (18 U.S.C. §§ 922(g), 924(e)) that would reduce some sentences and allow people in prison to seek shorter sentences in courts, based on those reforms.
