The Need for Accountability in Education Policy

Accountability is one of those words that seems to crop up again and again in education policy. Everybody seems to agree that more accountability is a good thing, but as usual, it’s easy for people with different interpretations of the same word to talk past each other.

Insurers are seeking huge premium increases because of ObamaCare's unbalanced risk pools

Health insurance companies are signaling huge health insurance premium increases ahead of the 2016 open enrollment period. This is due to the droves of older and sicker consumers who signed up for coverage on the ObamaCare Exchanges, according to a report from The New York Times. Requests submitted by insurance are approved by state regulators, such as state insurance commissioners, but the proposed rates reflect a higher utilization of healthcare than expected.

On their last day in session this term, the Supreme Court justices agreed to hear the case Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association. Cost-savings should be a priority in any Senate justice reform deal

Several Senate Judiciary Committee members are working on compromise legislation that would combine elements of a prison and reentry reform bill, the CORRECTIONS Act, and a sentencing reform bill, the Smarter Sentencing Act. The committee acted on prison and sentencing reforms, separately, in the last Congress, but neither proposal made it to the Senate floor for a vote.

New Bill to Limit the Number of Uber Drivers in NYC

Over this Independence Day weekend, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito stated that proposed legislation that would limit the number of app-based driving services (such as Uber and Lyft) was motivated purely by the need to control "traffic congestion, pollution and labor standards," not because of the falling value of taxi cab medallions. In an interview between Ms. Viverito and radio program host Brian Lehrer:

New Mexico's new protections for innocent property owners should not be weakened

In its most recent session, the New Mexico Legislature passed a comprehensive bill aimed at protecting innocent property owners from government overreach. Prior to the passage of HB 560, the Land of Enchantment lacked significant protections for innocent property owners, which earned the state a "D+" from the Institute for Justice.

Savings from prison reforms in Texas top $3 billion, crimes rates hit lowest point since 1968

"By being more intelligent about who you send to prison, being more selective in that, and putting resources into drug treatment, mental health treatment, and things that keep people out of prison, you can lower your costs and make the streets safer," Pat Nolan, Director of the American Conservative Union Foundation’s Center for Criminal Justice Reform, told FreedomWorks of the groundbreaking justice reforms implemented in Texas in a recent video. The reforms, dubbed the "Texas model," have become a blueprint for other, mostly Republican, states to cut prison costs and reprioritize spending or reduce the burden of taxpayers.
