Uber: If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em

Since its inception, the popular ride sharing service Uber has been struggling against the burdensome set of regulations governing taxi services. In essence, government enforces a taxi monopoly by making it ridiculously expensive for anyone to break into the industry. This limits the supply of taxis while keeping prices nice and high for incumbents. Everyone was happy except the people who had to put up with poor service, long wait times, and high prices.

Here's how McDonald's is responding to Big Labor's push for a $15 minimum wage

For the last two years, labor unions have a led a campaign known as "Fight for 15" to pressure the fast food and retail industries to raise the minimum hourly wage to $15. Big Labor has a particular interest in legislative efforts to raise the minimum wage, given that many union contracts are indexed to it. In a February 2013 research brief, the Center for Union Facts noted that collective bargaining agreements often "either set baseline wages as a percentage of the state or federal minimum wage, or mandate a flat wage premium above the minimum wage."

Conservatives and Liberals Should Agree to End the Export Import Bank

It’s no secret that Washington desperately needs to cut spending. Nearly everyone agrees that national debt levels are unsustainable. The Congressional Budget Office has warned that the nation’s debt is set to jump to 106 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2039. Clearly, we cannot continue down this path.

As Technology Expands Medical Access, Government Restricts It

Innovation is a remarkable thing. It makes everything faster, cheaper, and more accessible to average people. Innovation lifts all boats, but especially those of the underprivileged. The rich will always have access to the very best, but innovation levels the playing field by bringing formerly out-of-reach luxuries to the masses.

Technology Is Thriving, So Why Are the Feds Strangling It?

A growing number of economists are describing the current slump as a form of secular stagnation, where diminishing outlets for capital investment have slowed economic growth, reduced the demand for labor and stalled the economic recovery. While the technology sector remains one of the few areas of the economy where innovation and growth continue at a rapid pace, the Federal Communications Commission is moving forward with a series of new rules that may shackle this important part of the economy. From new mandates for municipal broadband to redefining what broadband means, to proposals to turn the Internet into a common carrier, the FCC is working to reshape how Americans connect to the Internet.

What Title II Regulation of the Internet Actually Means

There is a great deal of discussion today about empowering the FCC to regulate internet services providers as if they were public utilities. Supporters of Net Neutrality tend to think this is a good idea, because they fear that ISPs will give discriminatory access to bandwidth, creating a so-called “internet fast lane” for companies with enough capital to pay.

Worried About Companies Moving Overseas? Don’t Be!

As more companies are taking steps to move their headquarters out of the U.S., Congress and President Obama have expressed outrage at this supposedly unpatriotic practice. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has said that action needs to be taken, and 16 House Democrats have cosponsored a bill to make tax inversions more difficult. In short, a tax inversion is when a company relocates part of its operations to another country in order to avoid U.S. tax law.

Key Vote NO on the Paycheck Fairness Act, S. 2199

As one of our over 6.6 million FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your senators and ask them to vote NO on the so-called “paycheck fairness act”. Sponsored by Senator Barbara Mikulski, this bill is a piece of political theatre which could have serious economic impact for no appreciable gain.
