Judge Blocks the EPA's Damaging Water Rule

A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction against the EPA, stopping a controversial water regulation in 13 states. The states in question are suing to stop the new water rule, which would violate private property rights and substantially harm individuals and businesses alike. The injunction stops the EPA from enforcing its rule until the results of the lawsuit are decided.

The Government Wants to Regulate Your Personal Trainer

Professional licensure is a too-often ignored way for government to protect private monopolies, squash, competition, keep prices high, and reduce consumer choice. I’ve written extensively about the issue before, because the practice of licensure can be very harmful to honest citizens seeking to better themselves through gainful employment, and like all government regulations, it hits the poorest and least educated citizens hardest.

Bernie Sanders Wants To Control Ridesharing Services

Vermont Socialist and Democratic candidate for president, Senator Bernie Sanders, remarked in a recent interview with Bloomberg that Uber upsets him since it is highly unregulated, unlike the taxicab industry which holds a market monopoly on commercial ridesharing through its medallion system for controlling who can and can't drive a cab in certain cities. Though the remark was brief, Reason magazine contributor Peter Suderman was able to piece together Sanders' intentions based on his record as a politician.

How Occupational Licensure is Tied to Justice Reform

FreedomWorks has written previously about how occupational licensure laws hurt the economy, small businesses, and people without the means to get a government issued license. However, occupational licensure is also a justice reform issue.

Minnesota Expands Food Freedom

Minnesota experienced a win for liberty recently when the state reformed regulations on in-home food businesses. According to the Institute for Justice, almost every state has regulations, called cottage food laws, that limit the sale of food out of the home. However, until last month Minnesota was one of the strictest states, allowing many bakers to sell their products only at farmers’ markets and events, and capping the amount they could earn annually to $5,000.

Uber Fights Massachusetts State House In Order To Stay in Business With Unlikely Supporter

The never ending war on Uber is, well, still not ending! Uber is currently circulating a petition amongst its Boston users in advance of a proposed bill in the Massachusetts state House that would essentially place harsh regulation on Uber and other ridesharing services. The bill proposed by State Rep. Michael Moran and Sen. Linda Dorcena-Forry:

The White House Makes a Surprising Plea for Licensing Reform

Occupational licensure is one of those relatively obscure topics that it’s hard to get people fired up about. Most people are not aware that their barbers, their florists, their personal trainers, all need permission from the government to practice their professions. Even when they do know, most people don’t regard it as a big deal. The mindset that consumer protection trumps all other concerns is pervasive, even when this assumption fails an objective cost benefit analysis.

Health Regulations Stifle Innovation, Raise Costs

For decades, the costs of providing health care services have escalated. Congress passed ObamaCare, in part, as a supposed way to control these rising costs. However, the health care market was heavily regulated before ObamaCare. The increased regulations from ObamaCare have not prevented costs from rising, they only work to hamper innovations, which lead to bloated costs.
