Just Say No to Prescription Drug Price Controls

In a perverse misunderstanding of cause and effect, government regulators always seem to respond to their failures by calling for more of the same. If a policy fails to produce the desired effect, it must be because it didn’t go far enough. Education spending a failure? Spend more! Centralized health care costing too much? Centralize further! The ability to admit a mistake and reverse a bad policy seems to be one that government employees do not possess.

Gridlock Is No Longer The Way to Restrain Government

The phrase "do nothing Congress" has historically been used as an insult by those who want government to actually do things. To libertarians, however, and those of us who think that the government which governs best, governs least, gridlock has always been a source of comfort. Whenever one party becomes too dominant, the ability to ram through major initiatives without opposition is worrying. Since major forces in both parties basically want to expand government in different ways, it is only disagreement over specifics that keeps Big Brother in check.

U.S. Telecom Association v. FCC Could be Dangerous for Consumers

Today, the federal appeals court in Washington will begin to hear arguments regarding Obama’s net neutrality rule and whether or not the government should have the ability to micromanage the internet. As it would stand under the administration’s new rule, the government would have expanded capabilities to step in and add numerous burdensome regulations to the internet. This could pose many problems to businesses that range anywhere from substantial cost hikes to increased uncertainty in the economy; thus leading to curtailed innovation and less new products being introduced to the marketplace.

The FDA’s Looming Regulatory Onslaught Threatens the Freedom to Vape

Americans who are trying to kick their nasty smoking habit have found healthier alternatives in e-cigarettes and vapor products that could, quite literally, save their lives. But the bureaucrats at the Food and Drug Administration are trying to put this $3.5 billion industry out of business.

When Regulations Are More Trouble Than They're Worth

While the recent Republican debates have sparked lively discussions of tax and spending problems, many candidates have also highlighted the economic drag of regulation. This is important: Regulations have an annual cost of more than $1 trillion and have a significant impact on investment, innovation and economic growth. Rather than shackling the economy with new ones, Washington should conduct a comprehensive review of the regulatory burden with an eye towards eliminating redundant and obsolete mandates.

Biosimilars Bring Much-Needed Competition to Drug Markets

The high cost of medical care is one of the issues that most directly affect individuals and families. Historically, high initial investments in capital and a strict regulatory regime have effectively limited competition in many sectors of the medical industry. But thanks to advances in technology and a changing regulatory environment, some of that is starting to change.

The IRS's Plan to Chill Charitable Giving

Don’t you love donating to causes you believe in? Don’t you love that warm fuzzy feeling from knowing that contributing to a worthy cause? And don’t you especially love that you can support whatever organization you choose anonymously? That last one is especially important given the news over the last few years that the IRS has been targeting conservatives with audits and denial of tax-free status for nakedly political reasons. Well, if the IRS has their way, this may be a luxury that will soon go the way of the dinosaur. A new rule is proposing that non-profit organizations collect the “tax identification numbers” of all their donors who give over $250. For you and me, that means our Social Security numbers.

Internet Freedom Notches Another Victory in ITC Court Case

Last week, a federal appeals court delivered an important decision regarding the transmission and regulation of digital data that enters the country. In the 2-1 ruling, the court concluded that the International Trade Commission (ITC) does not have the authority to assume control over the flow of electronic transmissions, which could have introduced yet another regulatory blockade to stifle internet freedom.
