Go Local

Like me, you are probably frustrated by the direction your country has taken, especially when it comes to politics. Ballooning budgets fuel an increasingly intrusive government, while the political process focuses on unimportant side issues. The liberal media and even more liberal President don't even hide their zeal for statism any more.Continuing to talk online with other right-minded people is necessary but not sufficient to make you an effective player in turning our country around. If all you do is talk online, you wil go one of three directions:

School Choice Is A Civil Rights Issue

Here we stand, in the days between Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and National School Choice Week. To many, these two events might have little in common. If you scratch the surface, however, they are inextricably linked. In fact, many would agree that school choice is the civil rights issue of our time.

Empowering Parents - The "Trigger" Law

When children are trapped in failing schools, parents sometimes feel as though they are powerless to improve the situation. Fortunately, education reform is gaining momentum around the country, and parents have become more educated, organized, and empowered to make the best decisions for their children's education. One of the most dramatic examples of parent empowerment is the Parent Trigger, which allows parents to turn an existing failing school into a charter school, replace employees, or close the school entirely.

StudentsFirst Report Card Shines Light on Education Reform

Education reform advocacy group StudentsFirst, led by school choice champion Michelle Rhee, has released their State Policy Report Card. This report card was designed “to evaluate the education laws and policies in place in each state.” The study used three forms of criteria for evaluation to find states in which schools: Elevate teaching, Empower Parents, and Spend Wisely & Govern Well.

School Choice; Just a Click Away

My daughter spoke Finnish on Christmas Eve.I thought my nine-year-old had just made up some Swedish Chef-style gibberish until she provided a detailed translation. And a few of her phrases sounded a lot like my older Finnish relatives talking. As it turned out, my daughter had discovered Google Translate. She converted a few English sentences to the obscure Nordic language, clicked the “listen” button, and practiced the paragraph repeatedly until she had it memorized.

Robust School Choice is the Path to Graduation

For the first time, the U.S. Department of Education has released information on graduation rate by state. This year, states used common measurements, making these comparisons possible.  "By using this new measure, states will be more honest in holding schools accountable and ensuring that students succeed," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement Monday.

Georgia - Ballot Initiative 1 and School Choice

There are a lot of mixed messages surrounding the charter school amendment Georgians will see when they go to the voting booth on November 6th.  Supporters of the proposal say it will ensure that parents have more of a choice in their child’s education.
