The 21st Century Cures Act will Lead to Huge Spending Growth

The House is getting set to pass the 21st Century Cures Act (H.R. 6). The bill has good intentions. It is trying to do great things by reforming the patent process to streamline the research and production of drugs - getting them to patients faster, which will save lives. Unfortunately, the bill also creates a new spending program with some dubious offsets that make the overall bill difficult for conservatives to support.

Greek voters, on Sunday, rejected austerity measures crafted by European countries and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The results of the referendum, against which 61 percent voted, could mean the Mediterranean country exits the euro and see a run on banks similar to what it saw last week, or worse.

Inspector General McCarthy Testifies: Ex-Im Bank No Worse Than Any Government Agency

On June 11th, the US House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Health Care, Benefits, & Administrative Rules held a hearing on the fraud, waste, and abuse within the Ex-Im Bank. The witness was Acting Inspector General for the Ex-Im Bank, Michael McCarthy, who left me uneasy and disappointed leaving the hearing.

Just over two weeks ago, Republicans in both chambers of Congress voted to pass budget resolutions that would have achieved balance in ten years. But this week 12 Republicans joined Senate Democrats to kill a simple amendment that would have required them to pay for a new bill, thus ensuring that the bill will add at least $140 billion to our deficit spending over the next decade.
