Seattle's "Light" Rail Faces Weighty Problems

There is a belief among many Americans that government is inherently wasteful, inefficient, and arrogant. To the dismay of everyone in the Puget Sound area, the recent Sound Transit debacle has confirmed these stereotypes.

An Open Letter to Alan Greenspan

Copley News Service, 11/29/2000 Dear Alan: A while back I expressed concern that the economy was teetering on the verge of a hard landing rather than the soft landing you envisioned when you announced 18 months ago you were going to slow down the economy in order to fight inflation. Climate Change: Scientific Fact or Political Fiction?

In order to create public support for the United Nations Global Warming Treaty (The Kyoto Protocol), the White House recently released a report called the National Assessment on Climate Change. This report ignores sound science in favor of presenting worst-case scenarios, to the extent that even the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has called the report "extreme" and "alarmist."

Congress Uses the Surplus to Expand the IRS--What's Up With That?

It wasn't enough that the IRS has four times as many employees as the FBI and U.S. Marshals combined, Congress has now agreed to expand the size of the IRS by 9.36 percent over last year’s budget – that is $770 million more than the $8.22 billion budgeted in FY 2000. Congress, in their second conference report, approved a budget of $8.99 billion for FY 2001. This comes on the heels of a statement by President Clinton that he would not approve the first conference report compromise budget of $8.64 billion because it was “deeply inadequate.”
