Clock is Ticking on Entitlement Programs

Today marks the 50th Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, which were signed into law on July 30, 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson. These programs, along with Social Security, are collectively referred to as entitlement programs and are taking up a growing proportion of the annual budget. This problem is overshadowed by an even larger danger for Medicare and Social Security: their trust funds are about to dry up.

Unfunded State Pensions: The Next Economic Crisis

In the last decade we have had a housing crisis, a banking crisis and a car manufacturing crisis. If student loan debt does not catch up with us first, the next economic crisis is likely to be state and municipality pension debt.

Leftist Democrats foolishly urge Obama to expand Social Security

A number of congressional Democrats have signed a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to consider expansion of Social Security, the 80-year-old program designed to provide retirement benefits to Americans. The letter was sent on Monday for the White House Conference on Aging, a once-in-a-decade meeting where at attendees analyze and discuss various policy proposals for seniors and make recommendations.

How the United States could become Greece unless Congress takes mounting debt seriously

Greek voters, on Sunday, rejected austerity measures crafted by European countries and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The results of the referendum, against which 61 percent voted, could mean the Mediterranean country exits the euro and see a run on banks similar to what it saw last week, or worse.

Next, Big Millennial Tax – Raise the Cap on Social Security

Personal Freedom and Prosperity 110: The Rule of Law A government with moral and legal authority promulgates written rules and universally, impartially and uniformly enforces the rules, which provides a predictable and stable legal order on which to base economic and personal decisions. The law prevails, not the proclamation or arbitrary decision of a ruler, government bureaucrat, the enforcer (e.g., policeman) or judge.

"The War On Poverty Has Failed. What Do We Do About It?"
"This month, pundits from across the political spectrum are noting the 50th year of Lyndon Johnson's declaration of war on poverty. Liberals cite the good intentions of the programs, while Conservatives rue the trillions wasted on this failure and the massive growth of the federal bureaucracy it spawned (as I wrote about last year), but rarely do we do any self-examination. What do we do about it? "

The War On Poverty Has Failed. What Do We Do About It?

This month, pundits from across the political spectrum are noting the 50th year of Lyndon Johnson's declaration of war on poverty. Liberals cite the good intentions of the programs, while Conservatives rue the trillions wasted on this failure and the massive growth of the federal bureaucracy it spawned (as I wrote about last year), but rarely do we do any self-examination. What do we do about it? We can't just be about pointing out that the war on poverty has failed. We have to offer solutions. I participated in an intriguing discussion group this morning that posed this very challenge.

"President Obama\u2019s American Nightmare"
"Is the Obama Administration really trying to help Americans by putting them out of work, or is it just trying to create more voters by trapping them in a welfare state they are unable to escape? Trends over the last two decades indicate the latter."

President Obama’s American Nightmare

Earlier this year, White House press secretary Jay Carney suggested that Americans losing their jobs due to ObamaCare should be thankful. “At the beginning of this year,” he said, “we noted that as part of this new day in health care, Americans would no longer be trapped in a job just to provide coverage for their families, and would have the opportunity to pursue their dreams.”
