Congress doesn't need a commission to tell lawmakers that it's time for justice reform

There is significant transpartisan movement in the United States Senate to bring long overdue reforms to the justice system. A number of bills have already been introduced, including measures that would reform civil asset forfeiture statutes (FAIR Act), address mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent low-level offenders (Smarter Sentencing Act), and expungement or sealing the records of nonviolent offenders (REDEEM Act).

States are taking the lead on justice reform

Whenever there is a violent conflict between police and citizens, the media goes into a frenzy looking for someone to blame. Some accuse the police of brutality, racism, and inhumanity. Others point out the hazards of a dangerous and thankless job, which requires dealing with some pretty unsavory people. The one thing everyone seems to agree on is that there is a problem that needs to be addressed, but while politicians and pundits waste breath with accusations and complaints, it’s all too rare that we have someone step up and offer genuine policy solutions.

Maryland's Republican governor misses a big opportunity to protect innocent private property owners

Maryland General Assembly sought to add Maryland to a growing list of states that have reformed their civil asset forfeiture laws. Some states, such as New Mexico and Montana, have enacted comprehensive reforms by eliminating this form of government overreach while others, like as Georgia, have strengthened transparency and reporting requirements.
