Expansion of the Federal Safety Valve for Mandatory Minimum Sentences

The Sentencing Reform Act and the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act offered several modifications to federal sentencing laws. Although these bills did not go as far as the Smarter Sentencing Act, introduced by Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), they were improvements over the status quo.

Support the Fair Chance Act, H.R. 1905 and S. 842

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your senators and representative and ask them to support the Fair Chance Act, H.R. 1905 and S. 842, introduced by Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Reps. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and Darrell Issa (R-Calif.). This bipartisan legislation would aid prisoner reentry into society and lower crime rates, by delaying inquiries into criminal history for federal job and federally contracted applications until the conditional offer stage.

Peach State Justice: Successes of Smart on Crime Policies in Georgia

When confronted with a rapidly rising prison population, which had grown exponentially between 1982 and 2011 from 13,884 prisoners to almost 56,000, newly-elected Georgia Governor Nathan Deal decided to take action to address the problem of overincarceration in his state. By adopting smart on crime policies to reinvest limited resources into violent criminals that need to be in prison and into rehabilitative measures for those who can contribute to society, Gov. Deal’s three-phase initiative continues to be a huge success, both for public safety and fiscal savings.

Support the SAFE Justice Act, H.R. 4261

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to co-sponsor the Safe, Accountable, Fair, Effective (SAFE) Justice Act, H.R. 4261, introduced by Reps. Bobby Scott (D-Va.) and Jason Lewis (R-Minn.). The bill would focus resources on violent and career offenders, implement evidence-based programs to reduce recidivism, restore congressional intent to certain mandatory minimum sentences, and address over-criminalization in federal criminal statutes and regulations and over-federalization of criminal law.

Wisconsin Bill Tackles Civil Asset Forfeiture

Law enforcement officials in this are able to keep a portion of the assets that they confiscate so the system is frequently abused.
