Congress must take the next steps on federal criminal justice reforms

BY Adam Brandon

After months of work, Congress has finally taken the “first step” on criminal justice reform. The bill recently signed into law by President Trump, known as the First Step Act, offers a smart path toward reducing crime, reforming our prison system, and saving taxpayer dollars. The First Step Act is a landmark piece of legislation that will implement evidence-based reforms in the notoriously inefficient federal justice system.

Trump will go down in history for using the First Step Act to redefine what it means to be 'tough on crime'

BY Sarah Anderson

Without a doubt, President Trump’s recent signing of the First Step Act, which passed the Senate 87-12 and the House 358-36, marks a historic moment for conservatism in Washington. In response to more than a decade of evidence from successful criminal justice reforms in several states, the federal government has elected to enact similar meaningful reforms. Most importantly, Republicans are redefining in their own image the traditional, and rightful, meaning of “tough on crime.”

Key Vote YES the First Step Act, S. 756

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to vote YES on the First Step Act, S. 756. The legislation would reform our federal prison system to ensure that inmates have the programming they need to return to society as law-abiding citizens and would also tailor some of the most egregious sentencing laws to refocus limited resources on the most dangerous offenders.

Key Vote Alert on the Cotton-Kennedy Amendment to the First Step Act

As noted on our key vote alert for the First Step Act, FreedomWorks reserved the right to score any related votes including amendments. Accordingly, we will be scoring on our 2018 Congressional Scorecard vote(s) on the Cotton-Kennedy amendment to the legislation, which includes three divisions of deceitfully crafted poison pills each intended to harm the legislation and upset the supermajority support for criminal justice reform in the Senate.

On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) filed cloture on the motion to concur to the House amendment to S. 756. Mike Lee (R-Utah), and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).
