Tell Your Members of Congress: Support the Smarter Sentencing Act

As one of our more than 6.9 million FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and senators today and ask them to support the Smarter Sentencing Act and to co-sponsor the bill if they have not already done so. Introduced by Senators Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) in the Senate (S. 502) and by Congressmen Raúl Labrador (R-Id.) and Bobby Scott (D-Va.) in the House (H.R. 920), the Smarter Sentencing Act would “focus limited federal resources on the most serious offenders.”

Successful conservative reforms could be coming to the federal prison system

Political pundits and the media like to tell Americans that there's no hope of President Barack Obama and Republican-controlled Congress getting anything done. They're too far apart on almost everything, the talking heads say. This is certainly true on some big issues, but there are other areas emerging for which there is broad support on Capitol Hill and in the White House. Among these is criminal justice reform.

Mandatory minimums are not a conservative approach to criminal justice

The United States' criminal justice system is so terribly broken that it resembles "socialism with restrained mobility," says one House Republican, and it's imperative that Congress act now to begin to address the skyrocketing costs of incarceration.

Civil Asset Forfeiture: When Due Process and Property Rights Don’t Count

On February 6 the Federalist Society held as Civil Asset Forfeiture Update on Capitol Hill with the American Civil Liberties Union and the Institute for Justice as cosponsors. The event was held to bring more awareness to the issue which has been in the news lately with Eric Holder’s limiting order (which will leave around 86% federal civil seizure unaffected), recent legislative efforts and late night television skits. The event featured a diverse panel consisting of: Darpana Sheth (IJ), Kanya Bennett (ACLU), David Smith (Smith & Zimmerman PLLC) and Bill Piper (Drug Policy Alliance).

Here's one big reason why Rand Paul will oppose the nominee for Attorney General

Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee members had the opportunity to pepper Loretta Lynch, President Obama's nominee for attorney general, with questions about several controversial policies backed by the Justice Department or issues that could arise during her tenure, should she be confirmed.

Sentencing Reform: Let Judges Do their Jobs

The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the developed world, with enough people in prison to populate a small country. Preserving law and order is obvious a priority in any civilized society, but it’s hard to see how locking away a significant portion of the population can be considered a good thing, especially when so many are currently spending years behind bars for non-violent offenses.

Rand Paul Introduces Bill to Protect Private Property

Today, Senator Rand Paul held a press conference to introduce a bipartisan piece of legislation designed to restore the due process protections of the Fifth Amendment. The Fifth Amendment Integrity Restoration (FAIR) Act, would rein in government’s ability to seize private property without clear and convincing evidence that a crime has been committed.

Support the FAIR Act to Stop Abuses of Civil Asset Forfeiture

As one of our more than 6.7 million FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and senators today and ask them to support and co-sponsor the Fifth Amendment Integrity Restoration (FAIR) Act. Introduced by Congressman Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) and Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), the FAIR Act is a worthy check on the corrupt use of civil asset forfeiture – an important defense again unlawful search and seizure.

The real State of the Union response was delivered by Rand Paul

Being tasked with a response to the State of the Union address isn't easy. The message, usually given by a fresh face, is carefully crafted to fluff up a party's priorities for the coming months, as well as offer Americans a distinction between their agenda and what the president offered them earlier in the evening.
