Court Slaps Down IRS for Stonewalling Investigation

It's been nearly three years since the story of the IRS targeting and harassing conservative nonprofit organizations broke, but the investigation into what actually happened is ongoing and resulted in an important court ruling this week. One reason the task of finding out who knew what has taken so long is that the IRS has been resolutely uncooperative with the investigation, from the claims that documents had been lost or destroyed, to outright refusals to provide relevant evidence.

Pushing Back Against the EPA

Lately, Congress has been taking some significant steps to push back against federal regulatory agencies. Regulations cost our economy $2 trillion a year, and are written and enforced by unelected bureaucrats with no accountability to voters. They undermine property rights, representative government and the rule of law, and its high time someone did something about it.

A New Bill to Stop Midnight Regulations

The regulatory state has grown into the fourth branch of government. Executive branch agencies act with impunity, without accountability to Congress or to the voters. The Secretaries of Education, Energy, and Health and Human Services are basically unelected lawmakers who have the power to dramatically affect the lives and prosperity of every American citizen.

Generational Theft: How the Washington Political Establishment Is Robbing Millennials of Opportunity

"Generational theft," it's a harsh term but it's true. Every day, millions of Americans for paying into systems they will never see a return in, never utilize, never receive even adequate service from. Even worse, millions of people are paying into programs they don't want to participate in. The disheartening piece of the matter is that we aren't paying taxes simply to fund unpopular federal programs, we are paying taxes simply to pay off the interest and debt, hoping that one day we can start paying off what needed to be paid for in the first place. What have we done to ourselves? The better question at hand is what did our parents generation do to help get us here, and how does this affect the future of our posterity? Generational theft is not simply one generation of Americans who stole from another, it's the permanent enslavement to the debt we place on future generations who will inherit an inconceivable toll upon their entrance into the world.

House Acts to Save American Brick Industry

The House took a stand Thursday against an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rule that threatens the survival of the small companies that make up the bulk of the American brick industry. The EPA's Brick Maximum Achievable Control Technology (Brick MACT) rule will require brick plants to install costly new emission reduction equipment, after first tearing out the expensive equipment they installed to comply with a previous, less stringent version of the rule. The new equipment will cost about $2.2 million per kiln, yet will eliminate only a negligible amount of mercury emissions per year, far less than is in the teeth of the American population.

Regulatory State Threatens Jobs, Wages and Startups

The negative impacts of federal regulations on jobs, wages and innovation was the subject this week of hearings before the House Judiciary Committee. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA 49) opened the hearing before the subcommittee on regulatory reform by noting that many in Washington consider the “endless expanding web of intricate [federal] rules” to be natural or desirable. “No one they know is going to lose a job because of overregulation,” he added.
