Technology Is Thriving, So Why Are the Feds Strangling It?

A growing number of economists are describing the current slump as a form of secular stagnation, where diminishing outlets for capital investment have slowed economic growth, reduced the demand for labor and stalled the economic recovery. While the technology sector remains one of the few areas of the economy where innovation and growth continue at a rapid pace, the Federal Communications Commission is moving forward with a series of new rules that may shackle this important part of the economy. From new mandates for municipal broadband to redefining what broadband means, to proposals to turn the Internet into a common carrier, the FCC is working to reshape how Americans connect to the Internet.

What Title II Regulation of the Internet Actually Means

There is a great deal of discussion today about empowering the FCC to regulate internet services providers as if they were public utilities. Supporters of Net Neutrality tend to think this is a good idea, because they fear that ISPs will give discriminatory access to bandwidth, creating a so-called “internet fast lane” for companies with enough capital to pay.

Worried About Companies Moving Overseas? Don’t Be!

As more companies are taking steps to move their headquarters out of the U.S., Congress and President Obama have expressed outrage at this supposedly unpatriotic practice. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has said that action needs to be taken, and 16 House Democrats have cosponsored a bill to make tax inversions more difficult. In short, a tax inversion is when a company relocates part of its operations to another country in order to avoid U.S. tax law.

Regulations Are Stifling Economic Growth

As the size and scope of government have expanded, regulators have come to play a much larger role in our day-to-day lives. The advent of the administrative state has created a web of regulations covering everything from design standards for electric appliances to new rules that require hotels and restaurants to accommodate miniature horses as service animals. All too often, common sense is being replaced with exacting statutes and regulations that dictate very specific forms of compliance.

The War on Airbnb

The web startup Airbnb is finding itself in hot water lately. A peer-to-peer service that matches renters with rentiers, the company is under attack by entrenched lodging businesses such as hotels. It’s easy to see why. The company, which is fairly decentralized, breaks through the thicket of established chains. It matches real people with real people, each seeking to mutually profit from one another. As Jeffrey Tucker writes, Airbnb allows “regular people to cut through stultifying regulations and make better lives for themselves.” It breaks a sacred rule of economics: anything that bypasses the hold of legacy businesses is bound to garner unwanted interference.

America, The Land of Opportunity….Costs

Americans are suckers for a clever slogan, whether it is Burger King’s “Have it your way” or Walmart’s “Save Money, Live Better.” Americans for generations have bought into these slogans. Even America herself has a slogan advertising, at home and around the world, “The American Dream, the land of opportunity.” Most people are aware of America’s slogan; and many were raised by generations that heartily agreed with its promise. However, as we stand as a nation in 2014, the brand is in question.
