Blame Government for High Drug Prices

Hillary Clinton is using a story about a hedge fund manager charging outrageously marked up prices for an AIDS drug as a springboard for her plans impose a new set of mandates on insurance and pharmaceutical companies. The story is upsetting, no doubt, but as usual, progressives miss the root of the problem, and try to treat symptoms rather than curing the disease.

The Cost of Regulation

Volkswagen is in hot water with the EPA, after revelations that 11 million of its vehicles employ covert software designed to trick emissions testers. While being tested, the cars switched to a more efficient mode in order to beat the regulations, afterwards switching back to a higher performance (and hence higher emissions) method of operation.

Presidential Candidates Should Tell the Truth about the Minimum Wage

In this week’s Republican Presidential debate on CNN, a couple of the candidates took a brief time-out from slinging personal attacks and responding to trivia to address some actual issues affecting our economy. One of these issues is the oft-demagogued minimum wage.

Antitrust: a Wretched Hive of Government Hypocrisy

Antitrust law is something the government takes pretty seriously. In short, these are laws designed to protect consumers from companies that would abuse their market power to the detriment of the customer.

Right to Work 2.0 Highlights Badly Needed Reforms

The phrase “Right to Work” has traditionally been used to describe a system of voluntary union membership, as contrasted with the mandatory membership practice that are still common in many states. Now, the term is getting an update as people realize that unions are only one way of keeping hard working Americans out of a job. In fact, the government has all manner of schemes to protect their favored interests, while shutting out many of the people who need work the most.

The Compassion of Competition

Those who promote strict labor regulations always couch their arguments in terms of compassion for society’s underdogs. Mandated benefits from employers are meant to help workers struggling to make ends meet. Licensing requirements on businesses are meant to protect the unwary consumer from greedy snake oil salesmen, eager to take advantage. It all makes for good TV. But like most good TV, the truth is hidden behind a thick layer of stage makeup and soft focus. The very regulations that are supposed to help the little guy actually have the opposite effect.

Right-To-Work Laws: Facts and Fallacies

In recent years, the topic of unionization and right-to-work laws has been raised as a fairly contentious issue. As state legislatures sought to recoup the costs incurred due to lost revenue following the Great Recession, de-unionization policies, at least at the public sector level, were floated as cost-cutting measures.
