The Compassion of Competition

Those who promote strict labor regulations always couch their arguments in terms of compassion for society’s underdogs. Mandated benefits from employers are meant to help workers struggling to make ends meet. Licensing requirements on businesses are meant to protect the unwary consumer from greedy snake oil salesmen, eager to take advantage. It all makes for good TV. But like most good TV, the truth is hidden behind a thick layer of stage makeup and soft focus. The very regulations that are supposed to help the little guy actually have the opposite effect.

The NLRB's Labor Ruling Is Another Blow against Job Growth

The National Labor Relations Board has issued a decision that could have severe implications for many types of businesses across the United States. Essentially the ruling states that companies are responsible for labor practices between contractors and subcontractors. The higher-level companies will be considered “joint employers” with their independent contractors.

Right-To-Work Laws: Facts and Fallacies

In recent years, the topic of unionization and right-to-work laws has been raised as a fairly contentious issue. As state legislatures sought to recoup the costs incurred due to lost revenue following the Great Recession, de-unionization policies, at least at the public sector level, were floated as cost-cutting measures. But nearly as often, right-to-work laws at the private sector level were also explored and implemented, perhaps most infamously in the case of the state of Wisconsin under Governor Scott Walker.

Judge Brings California One Step Closer to Killing Uber

In the state of California, the popular ridesharing service Uber is under serious attack. We’ve covered how earlier this year, the California Labor Commission issued a ruling that the company’s drivers should be classified as employees, rather than the independent contractors Uber claims they are. This classification has major implications for Uber and all similar services in the future, since employees are subject to massive labor regulations from which contractors are exempt. The cost of complying with these regulations would be crippling, if not fatal, for Uber’s services in California, and the door would be closed on any businesses with a similarly innovative business model in the future.

Judge Blocks the EPA's Damaging Water Rule

A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction against the EPA, stopping a controversial water regulation in 13 states. The states in question are suing to stop the new water rule, which would violate private property rights and substantially harm individuals and businesses alike. The injunction stops the EPA from enforcing its rule until the results of the lawsuit are decided.

The Government Wants to Regulate Your Personal Trainer

Professional licensure is a too-often ignored way for government to protect private monopolies, squash, competition, keep prices high, and reduce consumer choice. I’ve written extensively about the issue before, because the practice of licensure can be very harmful to honest citizens seeking to better themselves through gainful employment, and like all government regulations, it hits the poorest and least educated citizens hardest.

Bernie Sanders Wants To Control Ridesharing Services

Vermont Socialist and Democratic candidate for president, Senator Bernie Sanders, remarked in a recent interview with Bloomberg that Uber upsets him since it is highly unregulated, unlike the taxicab industry which holds a market monopoly on commercial ridesharing through its medallion system for controlling who can and can't drive a cab in certain cities. Though the remark was brief, Reason magazine contributor Peter Suderman was able to piece together Sanders' intentions based on his record as a politician.

How Occupational Licensure is Tied to Justice Reform

FreedomWorks has written previously about how occupational licensure laws hurt the economy, small businesses, and people without the means to get a government issued license. However, occupational licensure is also a justice reform issue.
