Lawsuit Abuse

The Issue

An elite group of greedy trial lawyers is exploiting our legal system and turning it into "jackpot justice." Over $163 billion is paid each year in damages and lawyers' fees related to tort lawsuits.

The FreedomWorks Position

We want to give back our legal system to honest, decent Americans. Our grassroots army has fought and won legal reforms at the federal level and the state level in Florida, Alabama, Texas, and Illinois. We educate citizens on how frivolous lawsuits affect them personally - impacting their pocketbooks, businesses, values and way of life. FreedomWorks activists are spearheading efforts to enact real tort reform across the country. What you can do: Attend our town meetings on lawsuit abuse. And tell your elected officials that you want our legal system returned to decent, honest Americans with real grievances.

Florida's Personal Injury Protection Law: How a Government Mandate is Bankrupting the Sunshine State

No-fault/Personal Injury Protection (PIP) laws are a prime example of the danger posed by the substitution of free market mechanisms for government mandates. In states with PIP laws on the books, the costs of insurance premiums are skyrocketing and rampant fraud and abuse of the system is to blame. PIP laws were put in place to protect the consumer but in states like Florida, consumers are faced with ever increased premiums to account for the impact of fraud on the system.

Campaign to fight socialized medicine

FreedomWorks is leading an effort to fight socialized medicine, and we need YOUR help. I've attached the memo from the Senate Finance Committee indicating the various tax ideas that the committee is considering in order to pay for socialized medicine. As you can see, one of their bad ideas is to raise taxes on beverages like sports drinks, soda and alcoholic drinks. Raising taxes during a recession is bad enough, but it's especially terrible when they want to use the money to pay for socialized medicine.

Key Vote "No" H.R. 12: Paycheck Fairness Act

On behalf of hundreds of thousands of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to VOTE NO on H.R. 12: the Paycheck Fairness Act.  This bill purports to enforce more strictly the wage provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to remedy perceived discrimination in the payments of wages on the basis of sex or other reasons.  H.R. 12 is based more on the fallacy that the disparity between wages for men and women are solely the result of discrimination than the fact that there are market forces at work in the labor market that determine fair wages for all work.

Key Vote "No" H.R. 11: Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

On behalf of hundreds of thousands of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to VOTE NO on H.R. 11: the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.  This bill would negate the Supreme Court’s decision in Ledbetter v Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. by amending the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to permit discrimination claims against employers well outside the current statute of 180 days.
