Presidential Candidates Steve Forbes and Orrin Hatch Sign E-Freedom Declaration

(DES MOINES) - Today, Iowa Citizens for a Sound Economy (IA CSE) helped unveil the "E-Freedom Declaration." The declaration is a product of the E-Freedom coalition, a group of consumer, taxpayer and public policy organizations that oppose discriminatory and harmful taxation of the Internet.

Republican presidential candidate Steve Forbes was the first to sign the declaration. Orrin Hatch signed it this morning at Johnston High School while speaking to students about Internet Freedom. The E-Freedom Declaration was sent to the campaigns of each candidate. State representative Jamie Van Fossen of Davenport became the first state official to sign the declaration.

In part, the declaration states, "Therefore, I ___________, hereby declare that, if elected to the office of_____________, I will support making permanent the current ban on Internet access, sales or use taxes, and will work to reduce and ultimate eliminate discriminatory taxation of telecommunications services."

"The Digital Economy has created unprecedented economic opportunities - particularly for young Americans. The web is growing at twice the rate of the overall economy. We should let the Internet grow, develop and mature instead of letting the heavy hand of government stifle innovation," said Jason Gross, director of Iowa Citizens for a Sound Economy.

Yesterday, independent pollster Frank Luntz provide detailed analysis of Iowans' opinions on the Internet and information technology in their lives. The report, published by the Progress & Freedom Foundation, showed that a clear majority, 54 percent, of Iowa adults said that their job depends on the Internet. In addition, more than three of four, 76.6 percent, say that the revolution in information technologies is having an impact on Iowa’s agricultural economy. These results underscore the importance of Internet Freedom. The full report can be found at www.pff.org.

Citizens for a Sound Economy is a grassroots organization with more than 250,000 members across the country and nearly 4,000 in Iowa. CSE activists are Americans fighting for lower taxes, less economic regulation and more freedom. More information can be found at www.cse.org.
