Max Pappas Biography

Max Pappas

Max Pappas is the Vice President of Public Policy and Government Affairs at FreedomWorks. In this role, he is responsible for managing our presence on Capitol Hill, ensuring we take positions on the issues of the day, and making sure our positions on legislation are known by legislators and staff. He also relays the latest information he gathers from Capitol Hill to our members so they know when and on what they need to take action. Max first joined FreedomWorks (then Citizens for a Sound Economy) in July 2003. He is a frequent guest on radio and television shows, including every major US television network, most cable news channels, and many stations around the world. He also regularly speaks to groups across the United States about public policy issues, economics, and politics. His writing has appeared in publications nation-wide.

Max is also the Executive Director of FreedomWorks PAC. Central to this role is managing our endorsements. This means meeting regularly with federal candidates to discuss their political philosophy and positions on the issues and communicating with our members to see which candidates they like and want to campaign for. FreedomWorks PAC is the only PAC identified by The Hill newspaper among the 10 “endorsements the presidential candidates covet most.” According to a PS: Political Science & Politics study, “Of the Tea Party groups … only FreedomWorks endorsements were associated with a statistically significant increase in votes.” A Georgetown University working paper reinforced this, finding "being endorsed by FreedomWorks was associated with ... 2.4 and 3.0 percentage points ... only the FreedomWorks endorsement variable is positive and statistically significant.”

Max began his career in Washington in the 1990s at the Cato Institute. Max also worked for several years with best-selling author P.J. O'Rourke on many articles, including some appearing in Rolling Stone and Atlantic Monthly, and on O'Rourke's book The CEO of the Sofa, in which Max appears as a character.

In 2002 Max left Washington to run for State Representative in his home state of Massachusetts. Max has also worked as the director of research at BGR Group (formerly Barbour Griffith & Rogers), a government relations, strategic consulting, mergers & acquisitions and investment firm where he managed the team of policy analysts and research clerks.

Max holds a Master's degree from the London School of Economics and a Bachelor's degree in economics from the College of the Holy Cross.
