“Gelber to Rubio: Scare tactics don't help”
House Speaker Marco Rubio's op-ed piece on climate change has caused a stir. Rep. Dan Gelber of Miami Beach, the House minority leader, reacts with this statement:
"Now is not the time to shy away from sorely needed innovative ideas. We are long past denying the reality of global warming, and Florida lags behind nearly every state in addressing the serious challenges posed by climate change. Our response can’t be to simply provide more hand-outs and corporate subsidies as a substitute to hard greenhouse gas limits. Lasting economic benefits to our state will be achieved by adopting the long-term strategies set forth by the Governor. Governor Crist has moved Florida closer to the mainstream, and it is now up to the legislature and its leaders to embrace, rather than reflexively reject, these common sense initiatives. Employing scare tactics to avoid taking actions that are clearly necessary does no one any good. We should be well past ignoring the hard science of global warming that too many have already closed their eyes to. I urge Speaker Rubio to support Governor Crist’s innovative ideas."
This is the second time in as many days that a Democrat has come to the Republican governor's defense. Yesterday, Party Chairwoman Karen Thurman responded to criticism from Dick Armey (see post below). "And now, even though we suddenly have a Republican Governor who seems willing to do something about the problem, Far Right radicals remain in denial," Thurman said.
