In Memoriam: The Senate Filibuster, 1806-2013

So maybe pronouncing the filibuster dead is hyperbolic, but Senator Reid may well have struck it a mortal blow today.

NH Republicans Betray Party Platform with Medicaid Expansion Plan

On Thursday, New Hampshire legislators are scheduled to vote on a proposal to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Conservative Republicans in several state governments have led the charge to opt out of implementing Medicaid expansion due to the increased costs state budgets will be forced to adopt. However, the New Hampshire GOP establishment has crafted a plan that invites crony capitalism and will force New Hampshire to adopt revenue-increasing mechanisms, such as a state income tax, to pay for the implementation of Medicaid expansion.

NDAA in the Senate: Why We Should Be Prepared to Defend Ourselves from the Defense Authorization Bill

The Senate is expected to spend the bulk of the upcoming week on their edition of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the bill that outlines what Congress is allowed to spend on most aspects of defense for Fiscal Year 2014.  This includes the DoD, some of the Dept. of Energy, Veterans' Affairs, and "Overseas Contingency Operations" (OCO) spending, which is funding for the drawdown in Afghanistan.

Taxpayers Lose on Shallow Loss Entitlement

This week, I decided to research the Farm Bill to write a little bit about some of the “reforms” House Republicans who support the bill are so proud of. The CBO estimates savings of $35 billion over the next ten years (vs. the current baseline). The CBO is also notorious for underestimating costs, and it looks like this time won’t be any different.

ObamaCare's Grand Opening in Review

This past Tuesday was supposed to be the Grand Opening for ObamaCare's health insurance exchanges.  Their digital doors would be thrown open triumphantly, and countless thousands would stampede through the gates, racing to grab their shiny, new, government-approved health care like it was the newest iPhone.

Detroit Needs Responsible Government, Not a Bailout

I attend Hillsdale College in southern Michigan. It’s a pleasant place, the people are friendly, the landscape of the college is beautiful, and the academic rigor is intellectually stimulating. Some of the things that I’ve learned since becoming a temporary Michigander are that  the weather is utterly and truly unpredictable, that Ohio State fans are worst people on earth (their words, not mine), and that native Michiganders insist that “soda” is something you bake with and “pop” is the thing you drink. (They’re wrong.)

The Government Shutdown: Who is really to Blame?

The fight to defund Obamacare has been heating up quite a bit recently.  As the battle over the current Continuing Resolution to fund the government comes to a head, the Democrats in the Senate have lobbed many serious accusations against conservatives.
