Building a Machine To Win A Culture

People are reading entirely too much into President Obama's re-election. He and Organizing for America, the Democratic Party, and allied groups simply beat Romney and the Republican National Committee, state parties, and aliied groups at getting out the vote. The reason Obama was able to do that is not because of policy or growing popular satisfaction with socialism. He convinced people that he was on their team, and they were on his. After that, nothing Romney said made a bit of difference.

During the upcoming negotiations over the so-called fiscal cliff, the President and leaders of Congress will each try to leverage the crisis they created to their advantage.

Senate Democrats Think the Budget is a Joke; Sen. Patty Murray is the Punchline

Regardless of the election results, Americans have expressed adamant concern regarding the budget situation in the United States. Whether they are for higher taxes, reduced spending, or some combination of both, American voters realize that 3 and a half years without a budget passed by the Senate and 4 years of $1 trillion+ deficits is unsustainable and unacceptable, especially considering the size of the accumulated federal debt, which is now well over $16 trillion.

AWEA and the Wind PTC: Blowing Hot Air

The Wind Industry is a universal model for efficiency… not in energy production, but in marketing its product. Only the best and brightest marketing team, like our friends at the American Wind Energy Alliance (AWEA) could convince so many Americans and their lawmakers that the federal government should continue to subsidize and industry that is the model of inefficiency in the energy sector.

A Fiscal Cliff Litmus Test: The Wind Energy PTC

Over the next two months, members of Congress, the President, and his staff will be tasked with addressing and correcting the issues of debt, taxes, and spending, unmasked by nearly half a decade of weak economic growth. These issues are complicated no matter how easy either side portrays their solution to be. Years of ambivalence towards the cyclical issues surrounding the country’s finances and economy have led many to make inefficient decisions, and come to depend on the status quo.

No Official Has a Mandate

Politicians love to talk about a "mandate" when they are elected, as if the margin of their victory or the issues on which they ran their campaigns form a basis for governing. In fact, the only mandate an elected official has is to perform his duties.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) underscored that idea in the current political environment in a speech to the Senate:

Obama's Parting Gift: Midnight Regulations Incoming

Win or lose, the Obama administration isn't done expanding the government yet.  A large number of regulations are under development in several agencies that will cost billions of dollars in the economy and devastate companies already struggling to profit and expand in this sluggish economy.  Even if President Obama is defeated, his administrations can act during the "lame duck" period between the election and the inauguration to leave behind new regulations that will be difficult for a Romney administration to repeal - a practice known as creating "midnight regulations".

Hurricane Sandy, Frédéric Bastiat, and "Econ 101"

As the Hurricane Sandy recovery effort begins, the most recent reports put the American death toll at 88 lives. Estimates of the economic damage caused by the storm vary, but some put the figure at a staggering $50 billion. Like clockwork, however, a handful of "economists" have crawled out of the woodwork to proclaim that there's a silver lining to the disaster: Ultimately, this will help the economy!

FreePAC Connects Grassroots, Heroes

FreedomWorks held another of its successful FreePAC grassroots activism events October 19, this time in Kissimmee, Florida, near Orlando.  Freedom-loving activists from around the region came to learn the basics of getting out the vote (GOTV) and to be inspired by great speeches. The highlight for this jaded blogger is getting to meet the heroes of the movement.

Office Hours with Dr. Brough: “The Constitution, Taxes, and Social Security”

Our first ever “Office Hours” segment was a fantastic success last week. Thanks to everyone’s support the link was shared more than 16,000 times on Facebook. Numerous questions were sent to our e-mail account, and, while we wish we could answer them all, time allows for only a few.
