Rep. Jeff Landry Presents the SSPICE Act

This morning, Representative Jeff Landry (R-LA) and representatives from FreedomWorks and the Cato Institute presented a briefing on the Social Security Preservation through Individual Choice Enhancement (SSPICE) Act. In response to the seemingly endless debate over the payroll tax cut, Rep. Landry has introduced this common sense reform bill into the House (bill number H.R. 3551), while Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) have cosponsored an identical bill in the Senate (S. 2107).

Conference Call with Rep. Jeff Landry - Listen to the Call Here!

Last Monday, the 6th of February, FreedomWorks' Vice President Max Pappas held a conference call with Rep. Jeff Landry of Louisiana and hundreds of our members.  Congressman Landry gave an update on how things are going in Congress, and also discussed his bill the SSPICE Act, which addresses the payroll tax cut.  We received a lot of positive feedback from those who called in to listen, and we’d like to share the full audio of the call for those who weren’t able to attend:

Team Obama changes its story -- again! -- on whether health mandate is a tax

This morning, reversing position yet again, the Obama Administration testified in the House Budget Committee that the ObamaCare health care mandate is not a tax. President Obama's acting budget director, Jeffrey Zients, was asked by Republican Congressman Scott Garrett of New Jersey whether the IRS-collected penalty on those who don't comply with the health care law's mandate to purchase government-controlled health insurance is a tax. Zients replied, "No."

Time to Retire, Justice Ginsburg

On January 30th, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg ignited a media firestorm by arguing in Egypt that if she were to draft a constitution today, she “would not look to the US Constitution.”

SSPICE: A win-win solution for the GOP on payroll taxes

There's an easy way for the GOP to reclaim the tax issue, amazingly stolen from them this past year by the Democrats with their clever payroll tax cut. It's called the SSPICE Act, and embracing it would do the politically beleaguered Republicans a world of good.

ObamaCare: Burned by the “Tanning Tax”

(Artist: Gary Varvel, The Indianapolis Star, 2010)In its first nine months, the ObamaCare “tanning bed tax” raised only $54.4 million, barely one-third of the roughly $150 million predicted when the controversial — and costly — health care law was being debated in Congress.

Mandating Contraceptives, Violating Conscience

The trouble with legislation today is that the devil is in the details, and those details are usually created by the federal bureaucracy. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, popularly known as ObamaCare, was signed into law on March 23rd, 2010. So, why is it a surprise that some religious institutions, particularly Catholic hospitals and universities, will be required by law to provide contraceptives in their employee health care plans?
